Item Description: Harper & Brothers, New York/London, 1927. Hardcover. Book Condition: Good. Later Printing (H-B). (no dust jacket) [worn copy, binding intact, a fair amount of soiling to covers, staining to top edge of text block (not affecting the interior of the book), crimping to spine ends, light bumping at all corners]. The third novel by this Texas folklorist and author, best known for her 1925 novel "The Wind." The story concerns a woman who marries a parson whose wife has died in childbirth; she finds herself primarily a nursemaid for the surviving daughter, who grows up to be an arrogant and unscrupulous young woman, who goes off to New York and Paris, but eventually returns in time to steal the fiancee of the wife's other (biological) daughter, and run off again. The book has a memorable opening line: "Irene Robeline was sitting up with the corpse." (And by the way, there is no character named Griselda: the book's title is a riff on a folkloric figure who is noted for her patience and obedience -- just as the character of the daughter is named "Lilith" to evoke the Biblical character of that name.) [The H-B code indicates a printing date of August 1927, i.e. the same month in which the first printing appeared.] NOISBN. Bookseller Inventory # 21154
