Passauer Ausgabe von Justinianus‘ „Institutiones" bzw. „Corpus juris civilis", dieses elementaren Lehrbuches des Zivilrechts und gleichzeitig eines der berühmtesten Rechtsbücher aller Zeiten. Justinianus (römischer Kaiser von 527-569 n. Chr.) ließ diese Zusammenfassung der Rechtsüberlieferung der Römer zwischen 528 und 534 n. Chr. von zahlreichen Rechtsgelehrten erarbeiten. In den Jahren 533/534 wurde das Werk in drei Teilen („Institutiones", „Digesta" bzw. „Pandectae" u. „Codex Justinianus") verkündet und später (534-565) durch einen vierten Teil („Novellae") zum Codex, schrittweise erweitert. Die Bezeichnung „Corpus juris civilis" ist erst seit dem Mittelalter in Gebrauch. Das Werk sicherte dem röm. Recht im Osten des Reiches den jahrhundertelangen Bestand. Im Westen bildete es die Grundlage einer Renaissance des röm. Rechts seit dem 11. Jahrhundert. Seine grundlegende Bedeutung reichte bis in das 19. Jahrhundert hinein. Mittelbar und unmittelbar ist es das Fundament aller abendländischen Rechtskodifikation. - „Keine Reichsautorität hat auf Form und Inhalt der Gesetzbücher aller Nationen größeren Einfluß gehabt als das Römische Recht [.].
