Item Description: J.W.Goodspeed, Publisher, Chicago, IL, USA., 1878. FIRST. VG. Brown cloth beveled edge boards, gold page edging all around, Ornate gold and black decoration spine and front cover. It is troubling to describe this book. It is a rare true 1878 First Edition - published (by subscription only) by JW Goodspeed (Chicago) and AL Bancroft & Co. (San Francisco). The board decorations retain full detail and gilding - image of Apollo-like charioteer arising through a cloud; crown and laurel on spine. VG+ to nFINE-. Most of the internal paging is nFINE and tight. Unfortunately, some one in the remote past considered this a 'breaker book' and trimmed out several steel plate engravings. Some removed carefully, with the plate tissues intact with clear contact images visible uncreased uncut. But a few attemptss cut adjacent pages at their seams and left them as tip ins. Excruciating damage to such a scarce edition copy. Eight (8) steel plates still remain: "Life", "Motherhood", The Old Homestead", "Life in the Country, "A Rural Scene", "Return of the Prodigal", The Snow Birds' Christmas Visit", "Sickness". Basically a 'capitalist manifesto' extolling the possibilities of resourcefulness, industriousness, and the rewards of commerce for family, and life accomplishment, satisfaction. A re-affirmation of the founding father's social economic idealism, there at the dawn of America's second century. With some skill, attention and care, it might even be possible to restore this book; at the very least, protect this rare first edition copy from further degradation. It should be noted that the title alone distinguishes this edition from all others. The title is complete as given in this listing - there is no 'or' splitting a brief main title portion, from an extended sub-title part. A rarity for the American economic historian. Not an academic text, rather a 19th century guide book to accomplishing financial success for attaining a true - high quality of life. [B159]. Bookseller Inventory # 008907
