Legatura in reimboitage con pergamena antica da reimpiego; tracce di tassello deperdito al dorso. 60 pagine non numerate, compreso il bel frontespizio con titolo e ampia marca tipografica a silografia dell'editore; 477 pagine numerate, 3 pagine non numerate. L'opera è dedicata a Sforza Pallavicino, marchese di Borgo San Donnino e di Cortemaggiore, governatore generale della Repubblica Veneta, in data di Piacenza, 1° aprile 1567. Nella dedicatoria vi è citata la genealogia dei Pallavicino come sono citate tutte le guerre che Sforza fece in Germania. Il testo del trattato dispensa consigli pratici sui modi di guerreggiare sia per terra che per mare. Avvocato, letterato, scrittore di argomenti militari e sacerdote, Bernardino Rocca, detto ¿il Gamberello¿, nel 1566 redige quest¿opera, che rientra tra gli esempi di trattatistica militare ispirata ai modelli dell¿antichità: Plutarco, Livio, Polibio, Appiano, Cesare e altri. L'opera venne pubblicata a Venezia dal celebre editore piemontese Gabriele Giolito De Ferrari, fondatore nel 1523 della Libreria della Fenice a Rialto, rinomato per dedicarsi a vere e proprie collane finalizzate alla diffusione di opere classiche in volgare, il libro fa parte della Collana Storica curata da Tommaso Porcacchi. Margini superiore e inferiore rifilati con perdita della data impressa al titolo, un foro di tarlo al margine interno dei primi fogli, impercettibili tracce d’uso alla prima e ultima carta, nel complesso esemplare bello e solido in affascinante legatura seicentesca tutto marocchino marrone, doppia cornice con fregi iscritti ai piatti, titolo verticale al dorso (mancanza alla cuffia superiore), tagli dorati. Prima edizione di questo pregevole lavoro dello storico piacentino (1515-1587) che compose anche opere devozionali. Come in un analogo lavoro di Porcacchi (che qui ha curato l’edizione) il trattato guarda agli avvenimenti militari del passato per trovare paragoni e similitudini con battaglie di epoche più recenti, nelle quali l’autore aveva sviluppato esperienza diretta, distinguendosi in quella celebre di San Quintino. Numerous historiated woodcut initials in various sizes. Ornamental head- and tail-pieces. Contemporary vellum; repaired. A handbook on Renaissance military science including naval warfare illustrated with examples from ancient Greek and Roman history, and including a glossary of terms used in land and naval warfare. Rocca (1515-87),a lawyer and historian from Piacenza, was originally trained as an armourer; he took part in the decisive battle of St Quentin (1557)won by Emanuele Filiberto of Savoy against a larger French army. His dedication to Sforza Pallavicino Marchese del Borgo, Governor General of Venetian territories, is dated 1566. The book was edited by Tommaso Porcacchi (1530-1585), a close friend of the printer Giolito, whom he persuaded to publish a series of texts on ancient history ('Collana greca e latina').
