About this Item: Columbia University Press, 1951. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 196 pages. Latrobe is described as one of the most versatile men in the early days of the United States. A renaissance man, he was expert in many subjects, chief among them architecture. He designed much of the U.S. Capital and White House. Latrobe traveled to Louisiana in 1818-1820. He wrote about New Orleans a statement that is still true today, ". . . has at first sign a very imposing, and handsome appearance, beyond any other city in the United States in which I have been. During my residence here I shall have ample opportunity of describing what it to be seen here." In addition to the well written text the book is also accompanied by his sketches, some of which were doing in pencil and ink and others in water color. A tour de force on this historic city. We specialize in books about cities. Seller Inventory # ABE-1504098323363
