About this Item: D. Van Nostrand, New York, 1861. Hardcover. Condition: Good. First Edition. 674 pp. Signed on front free endpaper by nineteenth century officer, "Wm Perno Jackson Capt Co. Engr" Covers loose, spine missing. Henry Lee Scott saw a gap in the literature of the military, and sought to fill it with this dictionary of truly varied information relating to all aspects of the military. Not limited to legal information, the volume is comprised of definitions relating to "law, government, regulation, and administration." Including such general information as a recipe for shoe-black and long-winded recommendations for selecting a good horse, the work is much more than strictly a law dictionary. However, Scott devoted a good portion of the work to definitions and critical examples of oaths, mutinies, courts-martial, courts of inquiry, etc. The definitions are clearly written for practical purposes, in simple language. In his brief, otherwise quite ordinary preface, Scott added an interesting aside referring obliquely to the beginning of the American Civil War in 1861, the year of this book's publication: "It is only deemed necessary to add, that the work was not prepared in view of existing disturbances, but was begun some years ago." This indispensable volume enables today's reader to understand the military techniques and terminology of the era ending with the Civil War. Although changing technology has outdated many of the concepts and definitions, the book remains an essential reference tool. Seller Inventory # 000086

About this Item: printed for L. Hawes, and Co. [et al.], London, 1775. Fifth, and last edition, 8vo, pp. viii, [3]-24 plus unpaginated lexicon in double column; full contemporary reversed calf with blindstamped border, red morocco label on spine; spine ends chipped, red morocco label worn; a good, sound copy, with with the approbation leaf in which George III (to whom the book is dedicated) grants Fenning a license to print his dictionary for a period of 14 years. Little is known of Fenning. He was a compiler of several school texts, including an arithmetic, a geography, and a speller, the last of which had notable popularity in America before Webster. Webster himself was no doubt well acquainted with Fenning's speller, which in London made a 71st edition in 1823. This dictionary contains terms used in mathematics, astronomy, chemistry, architecture, printing, natural history and navigation, with "each word followed by an initial letter to denote the part of speech" --the first time I believe in a dictionary. A competent, trustworthy dictionary on "so extensive a plan as to unite the different excellencies of all other English dictionaries." Alston V, 231. Seller Inventory # 31072
