Item Description: Forgotten Books, United States, 2017. Paperback. Book Condition: New. Language: English . This book usually ship within 10-15 business days and we will endeavor to dispatch orders quicker than this where possible. Brand New Book. Written by Isaac Watts, a noted clergyman and hymn writer, the first edition of Improvement of the Mind was published 1727. Now made available once again by Forgotten Books, this republication is based on the 1885 version of the book. Watts book is best thought of as an almost three hundred year old self-help guide. While a man of the church, Watts did not let the views of Christianity too greatly influence his thinking. Improvement of the Mind is largely based on the philosophical school of logic. Watts believed that man can improve himself through simple, conscientious activities, and has outlined these activities in this text. The book opens with a list of sixteen general rules for the improvement of knowledge. From there, Watts proceeds to narrow his focus, with subsequent chapters focused on specific topics. Sections include an overview on books and reading, a guide for study and meditation, an instructional on how to improve one s memory, and many other useful subjects. In all, twenty chapters are included, all of which contain valuable, applicable advice. It is impressive to find such practical work in a book dating to 1727. While some of the prose is clearly of 18th century origin, the concepts and ideas forwarded are every bit as useful today as the day they were written. This is an inspirational book, and one that can doubtlessly be used by individuals as a guide to self-betterment. Improvement of the Mind is a timeless work, and surely one of the first great self-improvement guides. As a practical work of philosophy, it absolutely deserves a place in your collection, whether you are a regular reader of self-help books or not. Highly recommended. Item Description: Boston: Marsh, Capen & Lyon, 1833, 1833. Octavo. Original reddish linen cloth, paper spine label. Spine and covers patchily faded, spine label rubbed and fabric a little worn at head, scattered foxing but still a very good copy in the original cloth, with the errata slip before the appendix. 2 lithograph plates of cranial deformities, 2 of plans (for a "hospital for curable insane" and "house for convalescents"). First US edition, originally published at London in 1817. William Blake possessed a copy and annotated it: "Spurzheim's book of 1817 on insanity begins with a criticism of the public attitude toward and the medical treatment of madness. He argues that insanity and its symptoms have as many causes as any other disease and that it has no one specific remedy. Each case should be regarded as a special one without necessarily routine treatment" ( Hazard Adams, Blake's Margins: An Interpretive Study of the Annotations, 2009, pp. 141-43). Spurzheim (1776-1832) was known chiefly as a proponent of phrenology, and his book on that subject (Phrenology or the Doctrine of the Mental Phenomena, 1815) was studied by Poe. Item Description: London: printed for S. Manship, 1707. 8vo, pp. [xvi], 409, [7] advertisements; a very good copy in contemporary panelled calf, spine with later gilt titling. Early ownership inscription of T. Hanbury; 18th century bookplate of Gervas Holmes and later booklabel of Gawdy Hall Library. First edition: this was intended to be one of a series of treatises on Christian virtue by John Norris (1652-1712), but was the only one published. Norris was an early admirer of John Locke and wrote the first critique of the Essay concerning Human Understanding (not actually published until 1728). As a result Locke helped him to obtain the incumbgency of Bemerton, near Salisbury (where George Herbert had been rector); but the good relations were soon afterwards soured because of a misunderstanding and Locke never renewed relations with him. Norris however knew and admired several female writers and philosophers - Mary Lady Chudleigh, Damaris Masham (though not after the quarrel with Locke) and the poet Elizabeth Thomas.
