Item Description: Random House, New York, 1966. Hard Cover. Book Condition: VG+. Dust Jacket Condition: VG+. First Edition, First Printing. SIGNED - Octavo. Brown cloth covered boards and spine with shiny gilt lettering and silver design on the spine and gilt lettering on the front board. Very light bumping at the head and tail of the spine. Couple very small spots on the front board above the gilt "TC" where the color of the cloth is slightly lighter - noticable, but unobtrusive. Mauve colored endpapers. Signed by the author on the title page in very dark blue pen. State identified by "First Printing" statement on the copyright page. Binding is straight and tight. Pages clean, white, and crisp. Black topstain. 343 pages. Dust Jacket - has light rubbing at the head and tail of the spine and at the tips of the outside corners. There is a chip in the front corner of the tail of the spine that is nearly 1/2" deep but is nearly closed in by the paper of the jacket as if it were a worn chip rather than a torn one. Nearly unnoticable trace of rubbing in a few places along the upper and lower edges of the rear cover. Upper corner of the front inside flap has been price clipped, but the 1/66 is present on the lower corner of the same. Very nice overall appearance. Capote enlisted the assistance of good friend Harper Lee during his period of research for the book, and took her to Kansas with him to conduct interviews. One of the first books, if not the very first, of its kind, and considered by many to be Capote's masterpiece (along, some would say, with Breakfast at Tiffany's). Please feel free to contact us for more, or more specific, images of any part of this item. Signed by the Author. Bookseller Inventory # 001984

Item Description: The New Yorker Magazine, New York, 1965. Four issues of the New Yorker of Capote’s In Cold Blood, which is where it was originally published. Octavo, bound in half cloth. Signed by Truman Capote. In near fine condition. Rare. "Until one morning in mid-November of 1959, few Americans--in fact, few Kansans--had ever heard of Holcomb. Like the waters of the river, like the motorists on the highway, and like the yellow trains streaking down the Santa Fe tracks, drama, in the shape of exceptional happenings, had never stopped there." If all Truman Capote did was invent a new genre--journalism written with the language and structure of literature--this "nonfiction novel" about the brutal slaying of the Clutter family by two would-be robbers would be remembered as a trail-blazing experiment that has influenced countless writers. But Capote achieved more than that. He wrote a true masterpiece of creative nonfiction. In Cold Blood established Capote as the "herald of a new genre, ‘the non-fiction novel,’ which recognizes the convergence of fiction and fact in times of outrage, the insane surrealism of daily life" (Hart, 122; Allen, 247). "The best documentary account of an American crime ever written. . . . The book chills the blood and exercises the intelligence . . . harrowing" (The New York Review of Books). Item Description: 1965. CAPOTE, Truman. IN COLD BLOOD. A True Account Of A Multiple Murder And Its Consequences. NY: Random House, [1965]. 8vo., maroon cloth in dust jacket. First Trade Edition, top-edge stained, in the earliest dust jacket- with "1/66" on the front flap and with "Publishers Of The American College Dictionary And The Modern Library" at the bottom of the rear flap. With an interesting signed presentation from Capote on the half-title page: "For Peter Bell with all good wishes, Truman Capote." What makes this presentation interesting is that Peter Bell was one of the protagonists in Capote's earliest book "Summer Crossing." Capote began writing the novel in 1944, when he was 19 years old. A draft of the novel was later discovered in a basement apartment in Brooklyn after Capote left it behind. It was not dicovered or published until about 2004. Peter Bell is a sexually ambiguous, preppy friend of the main protagonist in the novel. Was there a "real" Peter Bell? A little more research on this book wouldn't hurt! Near fine (bright); very minor wear (few very tiny nicks & tears base of spine) d/j. $2500.00. Bookseller Inventory # 7848

Item Description: Random House, New York, 1965. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. SIGNED LIMITED FIRST EDITION of Capote's masterpiece, one of only 500 copies signed by Capote. "One of the more distinguished achievements in reportage by any writer, In Cold Blood first appeared serially in the New Yorker, where it examined with extraordinary depth, precision, and drama the victims and their killers. So immense was the stress of the editorial undertaking, however, that Capote became addicted to tranquilizers and developed an emotional attachment to the criminals, whose deaths by hanging he witnessed at the Kansas state penitentiary. From more than four thousand pages of typewritten notes gathered with Harper Lee, Capote's celebrated 'non-fiction novel' won the Mystery Writers of America Edgar Allan Poe Award and exacted enough of a psychological toll upon its author to preclude much sustained work in the future" (American National Biography). New York: Random House, [1965]. Octavo, original black cloth, original slipcase; original acetate. A little edgewear and chip at the bottom of the acetate. Book and original slipcase fine.
