Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. A Near Fine copy of the British 1st Edition of the world famous novel which coined the expression, "What Would Jesus Do?" This is the UK first edition and from the Preface the printing history of this story by Charles M Sheldon, pastor of a Congregationalist Church in Topeka, Kansas, was that the story was first composed in the winter of 1896 and read in weekly installments to his congregation. There are 12 chapters. It was then printed as a serial in The Advance (Chicago). It was then issued as a "paper covered volume" at a price everyone could afford. This hardcover book, printed in London, England, is the first hardcover issue printed outside the United States. The Advance also issued a hardcover volume later in 1897. The Preface is dated November, 1897 in Topeka, Kansas. Green cloth board with decorative gilt titles on the front board and spine, slight fraying to foot of spine. 307 pp. x pp. adverts. The book shows general light to moderate wear. Black endpapers. Four illustrations, one with tissue guard, else a sound book. Internally the joints are just starting but still sound. The sewn binding is still intact. Overall a Very Good or better copy of a book which was obviously read. The adverts reference one book written by Sheldon and that is The Crucifixion of Philip Strong, which was published in 1894 and precedes In His Steps (1897). A Very Scarce copy of this classic story. Photos will be posted.
