About this Item: New York: Harper & Row, 1971. No Binding. Condition: Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Fine full-color art print from Maurice Sendak's Caldecott Medal Honor Book IN THE NIGHT KITCHEN (1970), illustrating "Milk in the Batter! Milk in the Batter! We Bake Cake! And Nothings The Matter!" showing three Oliver Hardy chefs whipping together the ingredients for a Mickey-Cake while in the far top left of the image a naked Mickey watches (a pictorial allegory preliminary to giving birth after mixing assorted Mickey ingredients and then baking them inside an oven). Whereas in the book this sequence is printed on two separate pages, here they are both printed on one sheet (as in the original artwork) with the combined image measuring 10 x 16-1/8 inches (approx 25.4 x 41 cm) on larger paper. This sheet was actually printed in 1971 as part of a series of favorite images selected by Mr Sendak and newly re-photographed from original artwork at the Sendak archives, Rosenbach Museum & Library, Philadelphia; altogether 19 different designs from eight titles were chosen for this project, to allow friends and collectors the opportunity to hang a print on their wall without mutilating any of his books, some in full color and others in duotone or black line. All of these were issued unsigned, but over the years the artist has selectively autographed a few copies of various images for friends and occasionally for concessionary sale. This particular copy of this extraordinary print is in very fine condition and is fully ink-signed by the artist below the lower right corner of the image. Signed by Illustrator(s). About this Item: Harper & Row Publishers, New York, 1970. First edition of Sendak's classic work. Signed by Maurice Sendak on the front free endpaper. Near fine in a very good first-issue dust jacket with the correct code. The Caledecott medal is adhered to the front panel. Sendak's homage to New York City and the movies of the 1930s, In the Night Kitchen "spins the reader through the surreal fantasy of a child's dream, like Alice into Wonderland or Dorothy into Oz." Like most of Sendak's work, Kitchen is "a celebration of the primal, sensory world of childhood and an affirmation of its imaginative potency" (Silvey, 586). Having received nine awards, The Night Kitchen's popularity is evident, but so is its controversy. When three-year-old protagonist Mickey enters the Night Kitchen, he loses his pajamas and is fully naked in some parts of the story. Some critics have objected to Mickey's nudity, which is fully depicted, and others have interpreted sexual innuendo in the proceeding events. Consequently, the book's release in the United States sparked debate, with the inclusion of child nudity frequently noted as morally problematic. The book has been ranked 25th place on the "100 Most Frequently Challenged Books of 1990-2000" list by the American Library Association. Seller Inventory # 1054

About this Item: New York: Harper & Row, 1970. Hard Cover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Included. First Edition. First edition, first printing. Illustrated by the author. Signed by Sendak on the title page. Original publisher's cloth, first issue dust jacket. An excellent copy with a former owner gift inscription to front endpaper; in a very bright jacket with only very minor wear and rubbing to the extremities, and without the Caldecott Medal to the front panel (presumably an earlier printing prior to receiving the award the following year). Overall, a near fine copy. In the Night Kitchen is a popular children's book that has been the subject of much controversy due to the main character's pervasive nudity. The story tells of a young boy named Mickey who dreams that he ventures to the "Night Kitchen" where giant bakers make morning bread. During his fantastical dream, Mickey falls and almost becomes baked into the bread, then builds a plane out of dough to get the milk necessary to complete the baking. Although their plots are similar, In the Night Kitchen has quite different illustrations than the author's iconic Where the Wild Things Are. Both employ dream-like color schemes, but the former's illustrations have none of the latter's distinctive cross-hatching. Regardless of its artistic and literary qualities, many schools and libraries took issue with Mickey's nudity, in some cases going so far as to cut out or color over his private parts. In a 1986 interview with NPR, Sendak explained his decision to draw Mickey without clothes: "I didn't set out to cause a scandal. I set out to do a very particular work where he had to be naked in order to confront a particular dream he was in. You don't go into a dream wearing Fruit of the Loom underwear or PJs. You go tutto. You go yourself, your being, and that's why he was naked, and it was idiocy. It was incredible idiocy what went on over that book for many, many years about Mickey being naked." Although it is still one of the most frequently challenged books today, In the Night Kitchen remains a popular and acclaimed piece of children's literature. Signed by Author. About this Item: 1970. First Edition. SENDAK, Maurice. In The Night Kitchen. [New York]: Harper and Row, (1970). Tall thin quarto, original white cloth, mounted cover illustration, original dust jacket. $6500.Scarce first edition, advance review copy, of this wonderfully illustrated classic, inscribed for Burt Britton, the avid book collector and co-founder of Books & Co: "For Burt—Mazel-Tov! Maurice Sendak. Dec. '70," with a small self-portrait by Sendak (presumably casting himself as Mickey). With publisher's advance review slip laid in.Sendak's homage to New York City and the movies of the 1930s, In the Night Kitchen "spins the reader through the surreal fantasy of a child's dream, like Alice into Wonderland or Dorothy into Oz." Like most of Sendak's work, Kitchen is "a celebration of the primal, sensory world of childhood and an affirmation of its imaginative potency" (Silvey, 586). It was a Caldecott Honor book in 1971. First-issue dust jacket, without the Caldecott medal affixed. Hanrahan A75. This copy is inscribed to Burt Britton, an avid book collector and eventually the co-founder of Books & Co in New York City. While working as a bartender at Village Vanguard in New York, Burt Britton found himself alone with Norman Mailer. When Mailer asked Britton, "What do you want from me, Kid?" after last call, Britton replied that he wanted Mailer to draw him a self-portrait. Mailer did and so began a lifelong collecting interest. Britton collected hundreds of self-portraits—first while working at Vanguard and later while working at the Strand bookstore. He solicited self-portraits from novelists such as Truman Capote and Jorge Luis Borges, from musicians such as Miles Davis, and even from sports stars such as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Before long, he was the owner of an exceptionally valuable collection. Random House eventually bought book rights to a selection of the portraits in 1976 as Self-Portrait: Book People Picture Themselves. In 1978, Britton moved to Books and Co. and continued his collection. This book contains a self-portrait sketch by Maurice Sendak, apparently implying that Mickey from In the Night Kitchen is him (or perhaps that all of his characters are him, as his self-portrait sketch in Where the Wild Things Are portrayed him as a Wild Thing).Book fine, bright, corner-clipped dust jacket with only slightest rubbing to extremities. A very nearly fine inscribed copy with a wonderful provenance. Signed. Seller Inventory # 86656
