About this Item: Brown Book Group Virago Press Little Sep 2012, 2012. Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - 'Margaret Atwood is a writer of metaphysical wit, who can always twist our preconceptions . . . She is genuinely inventive, and her quirky and satirical wit does not limit or define her' Sunday Telegraph In Other Worlds is Margaret Atwood's account of her lifelong relationship with the literary form we have come to know as 'science fiction', from her days as a child reader, through her time at Harvard, where she studied the Victorian ancestors of the form, and later as a writer and reviewer. In this volume she brings together three Ellmann lectures, including 'Dire Cartographies' which investigates Utopias and Dystopias, and touches on Atwood's own ventures into those constructions. In further essays Atwood explores and elucidates the differences - as she sees them - between 'science fiction' proper, and 'speculative fiction'. For readers who loved The Handmaid's Tale, Oryx and Crake and The Year of the Flood, In Other Worlds is a must. 'Eminently readable and accessible . . . The lectures are insightful and cogently argued with a neat comic turn of phrase . . . Her enthusiasm and level of intellectual engagement are second to none' James Lovegrove, Financial Times 272 pp. Englisch. Seller Inventory # 9781844087556

About this Item: Random House US Aug 2012, 2012. Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - The author of The Handmaid's Tale and Oryx and Crake engagingly explores her lifelong relationship to science fiction, both as a reader and as a writer. At a time when the borders between literary genres are increasingly porous, Margaret Atwood maps the richly fertile crosscurrents of speculative and science fiction, slipstream, utopias and dystopias, and fantasy, and muses on their roots in the age-old human impulse to imagine new worlds. She shares the evolution of her personal fascination with this branch of literature, from her days as a child inventing a race of flying superhero rabbits, to her graduate study of the Victorian ancestors of SF to her appreciations of such influential writers as Marge Piercy, Rider Haggard, Ursula K. LeGuin, Kazuo Ishiguro, Aldous Huxley, and Jonathan Swift. As humorous and charming as it is insightful and provocative, In Other Worlds brilliantly illuminates 'the wilder storms on the wilder seas of invention.' 272 pp. Englisch. About this Item: McClelland & Stewart, Signal, Toronto, 2011. Hard Cover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First Edition. 1st printing of the first Canadian hardcover edition SIGNED by Atwood with a black ballpoint pen on the title page. LAID IN to this copy is one of Ursula K. Le Guin's "dragon" bookplates SIGNED by Le Guin. Atwood dedicated In Other Worlds to Le Guin, "one of the reigning monarchs of SF and Fantasy" because Le Guin caused what Atwood calls an "uproar" in the SF and Fantasy communities with her 2009 review of Atwood's three novels of speculative fiction to that date: The Handmaid's Tale, Oryx and Crake and The Year of the Flood. In her Introduction to this book, Atwood quotes Le Guin from her article in The Guardian: "Margaret Atwood doesn't want her novels to be called Science Fiction." Atwood wants "to protect her novels from being relegated to a genre still shunned by hidebound readers, reviewers and prize-awarders. She doesn't want the literary bigots to shove her into the literary ghetto." The next year, Atwood and Le Guin participated in a public forum in which they clarified their respective definitions of SF and Fantasy and cleared the air. Still, copies of this book signed by both authors are likely to be few and far between. There is ample space on the dedication page to affix the Le Guin-signed, peel-and-stick bookplate, if desired. This copy is unread with sharp corners and spine ends, and the jacket is bright, crisp and price intact. Canadian orders will be charged GST. Signed by Author. Seller Inventory # 002012
