The Ruhleben Camp Magazine 1916. La Vie: Ruhleben (Thorpe)

Item Description: Ruhleben, Ruhleben, 1916. Hardback. Book Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Eight issues bound together in buckram backed paper-covered boards. 14x20x2cm. In excellent condition. c. 30 - 40pp per issue, illustrated. Inscribed to Mrs H R Thorpe . , London, from James R L Thorpe Bau 11, Box 4 ; The Ruhleben internment camp (near Berlin) was a civilian detention camp in Germany during World War I containing some 4,000 British civilian men and boys caught in enemy territory at the outbreak of war. The German authorities adhered to the Geneva Convention and allowed camp detainees to administer their own internal affairs. Gradually, a mini-society evolved in the camp. Letters, books . and a printing press were all allowed into the camp. They had their own postal service and could send abroad (with their own stamps). A magazine was born. The 1916 April edition of the Ruhleben Camp Magazine, replaced the previous year's 'In Ruhleben' Camp. It was a larger and better journal and sold by vending machine - total sales were about 2000. Despite the relatively small number of French detainees, La vie française de Ruhleben proved popular with men taking French courses and about a thousand copies sold (See 'Ruhleben': A Prison Camp Society by J Davidson Ketchum, Toronto, 1965).
