First edition. xxiii, 302pp., 19 black and white illustrations and a 1 page publisher's advertisement. Top edge gilt. This is a novel, set in the 18th century, by the husband and wife team of Agnes and Egerton Castle, who wrote several popular novels in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Egerton Castle Egerton (1858-1920) was an author in his own right, antiquarian, and famous swordsman., being captain of the British épée and saber teams at the 1908 Olympics. He was born in London into a wealthy family; his maternal grandfather was the publishing magnate and philanthropist Egerton Smith. He was a lieutenant in the Second West India Regiment and afterwards a captain in the Royal Engineers Militia, and an expert on bookplates and a keen collector. The book is bound in blue cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine, gold titling and illustration on the front board, and blind stamped design on the rear board. The book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some light stains and soiling on the boards. The spine edge are rubbed and the spine ends are bumped with a little damage to the cloth at the bottom of the spine and top rear spine corner. There is wear to the cloth on the corner tips. The contents are tight and clean with some scattered light foxing. The front free endpaper has an inscription writte by one of the authors that reads: "To our witty, kind and inspiring host, from the authors. Agnes & Egerton Castle - Longridge Towers August 1904".
