Item Description: Impressum Venetiis : Per Melchiorem Sessam & Petrum de Rauanis socios, anno Domini 1523 die 7 Februarii., 1523. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 1523 Juvenal & Persius SATIRES Classical Rome LATIN Juvenalis Post Incunable Famous Greco-Roman Literature / Venetian Printing Decimus Iunius Iuvenalis, known in English as Juvenal, was a Roman poet active in the late 1st and early 2nd century AD, author of the Satires. The details of the author's life are unclear, although references within his text to known persons of the late 1st and early 2nd centuries AD fix his terminus post quem. The Satires are a collection of satirical poems by the Latin author Juvenal written in the late 1st and early 2nd centuries AD. Persius, in full Aulus Persius Flaccus (34 – 62), was a Roman poet and satirist of Etruscan origin. In his works, poems and satires, he shows a stoic wisdom and a strong criticism for the abuses of his contemporaries. His works, which became very popular in the Middle Ages, were published after his death by his friend and mentor the stoic philosopher Lucius Annaeus Cornutus. Main author: Decimus Junius Juvenalis; Aulus Persius Flaccus Title: Iu. Iuuenalis una cum Au. Persio nuper recogniti. Book Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 1515 Petrarch on Horoscopes Occult Humanism Philosophy Miniature P. Incunable VERY RARE De remediis utriusque fortunae Venice Francesco Petrarca (1304 – 1374) was an Aretine scholar and poet in Renaissance Italy, and one of the earliest humanists. Petrarch's rediscovery of Cicero's letters is often credited for initiating the 14th-century Renaissance. Petrarch is often called the "Father of Humanism". De remediis utriusque fortunae is a collection of 254 Latin dialogues written by the humanist Francesco Petrarca (1304-1374), commonly known as Petrarch. The dialogues, completed towards the end of Petrarch's life, are treasure-chests of wisdom and humour which, despite the passing of six centuries, have not lost their relevance. The writing is a bouquet of moral philosophy, set out to show how thought and deed can generate happiness on the one hand, or sorrow and disillusionment on the other. In a recurring theme throughout the dialogues, Petrarch advises humility in prosperity and fortitude in adversity. Exceedingly rare with none selling worldwide and no auction records to be found Main author: Francesco Petrarca Title: De remediis utriusque fortunae libri duo Francisci Petrarchae Published: Venetiis : In aedibus Alexandri Paganini Inclito lauretano principe, IIII Idus Nouem [10 Nov.], 1515. Item Description: Parisijs : Impr. J. Badij Ascensij, 1519., 1519. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 1519 Post Incunable John Major SCOTTISH Philosophy Sententiarum Jodocus Badius John Major (or Mair) (1467–1550) compare@$3500+ John Major (or Mair) (1467–1550) was a Scottish philosopher, much admired in his day and an acknowledged influence on all the great thinkers of the time. He was a very renowned teacher and his works much collected and frequently republished across Europe. His “sane conservatism” and his sceptical, logical approach to the study of texts such as Aristotle or the Bible, were less prized in the subsequent age of humanism where a more committed, and linguistic/literary, approach prevailed. Jodocus Badius (1462–1535) was a pioneer of the printing industry, and also a renowned grammarian and pedagogue. Badius’s shop was one of the most productive of the period 1501–1530. We do not find this very rare book for sale elsewhere worldwide; however, we find other post-incunable works my John Major for sale elsewhere for $3,500! This particular book is extremely desirable due to the printer, Badius. Note, on the title page, the illustrated woodcut device in the center of the page. This illustration was a trademark of the Badius print shop which was one of the most productive and popular print shops in the world during the first quarter of the 16th-century. Many other Badius printings can be found for sale elsewhere for well over $12,000! The colophon states: “Impressum est rursum hoc opus Parisijs sub recognitione et impensis Jodoci Badij Ascensij ad Idus Octobris Anni redemptionis humane MDXIX Deo gratie. Book Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 1509 Saint Venerable BEDE English Monk on Time Cosmology Augustine P. Incunable Saint Venerable Bede was an English monk during the 7th- and 8th-centuries. He is most remembered for his ecclesiastical work on the history of English people, in which he discusses the establishment and growth of the church throughout the known world. However, he did not write exclusively of church theology. In 703 A.D., Bede composed a work on the development of time – “De Temporibus.” This book was one of the first works to contain details on the principles of Easter Computus, or figuring the date of Easter Sunday. Bede was known to contemplate and make theories on the cosmos, and thus was able to give instructions on computing Easter based on the sun, moon, and zodiac. This book, a reissue of the 1505 first edition, also includes many of Bede’s ‘Lives’ in which he gives descriptions of important figures such as Saint Anastasius, Byzantine Emperor Phocas, Saint Augustine of Hippo, and Alexander the Great.
