About this Item: John Stockdale, London, 1790. Hardcover. Condition: Very good. First edition. 1083-1752 p. 25 cm. Rebound in brown cloth with gold lettering on spine. Some shelf wear. Red stain on rear of spine. Pencil and ink notes on front endpapers as well as some label residue. Hinges cracking inside. Mild foxing. Pages 1251 - 1262 loosening. The first concordance to Shakespeare's works ever published. Ayscough was a librarian and indexer known as the "Prince of Indexers." A cataloguer in the British Museum in the 18th century, he accumulated over 20,000 pieces of paper cataloguing their manuscripts. He died in 1804, very fittingly in the museum in which he'd spent so much time. The unusual page numbering stems from this concordance being published as a supplement to Stockdale's two-volume works of Shakespeare. Seller Inventory # 105546

About this Item: John Stockdale, Opposite Burlington House, Piccadilly, London, 1790. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. pp.1752, with 8 pages of John Stockdale’s catalogue including advert for his forthcoming “in the press and speedily to be published,in two large volumes Folio. Shakespeare including the Whole of his Dramatic Works.” (1790) Original Calf boards with tooling around margins, later re-backed in matching calf with 5 raised bands. Green leather label gilded titles. In Excellent Condition for its age. Faint foxing on title page otherwise all pages clean and bright. Text block and binding tight. A lovely copy. Note: Until Ayscough brought out his 'Index' in 1790 there was no concordance to Shakespeare. This was a speculation on the part of the publisher, John Stockdale, who paid two hundred guineas for the index, which was specially designed to accompany his edition of the 'Dramatic Works'. In this compilation the words are arranged alphabetically with the lines in which they occur, then the name of the play, and in five separate columns the act, scene, page, column, and line. The last three refer only to the edition of 1790, but the index may be used with any other text. Seller Inventory # 2015/3
