About this Item: Random House, New York, 1967. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. A handsome copy of the 1967 stated 1st printing of this seminal artist's book, cited by both Andrew Roth and Martin Parr as among the most influential photo/artists' books of the century. This copy, while boasting a very bright front cover (with crisp, completely unflecked silver lettering along the spine), is missing 2 of its 10 original multiples/objects. Included are: the castle pop-up; the red accordion (which doesn't squeak); the bi-plane pop-up; "The Chelsea Girls" paper wheel (unattached); the Velvet Underground/Lou Reed record (attached); the double-image rainbow nose; the Hunt's Tomato Paste pop-up; and the balloon (inevitably smushed down, as in virtually every copy). Missing are: the 12-sided "sphere" and the 8 rectangular tear-offs. Nonetheless, a respectable, solid copy, and in the much less common hardback. Tight and VG to VG+, with light scuffing and soiling to the rear panel. The page opposite the Velvet Underground/Lou Reed record was roughly handled and does show some minor tearing; otherwise, the interior is very clean. (From the title page: "with the assistance of Stephen Shore, Paul Morrissey, Ondine, Nico -- several photographs by Nat Finkelstein, Factory Fotos by Billy Name"). Seller Inventory # 13265

About this Item: Random House, NY, 1967. Stiff Wraps. Condition: Very Good+. No Jacket. First Edition, 1st. Printing. Unpaginated.(56 pages). Profusely illustrated with photos. Contibutions by Paul Morrissey, Ondine, Nico & Nat Finkelstein et.al. Stiff foil card covers are very bright, clean, unflaked, spine square (without any crease), tips are sharp. All 10 of the original attachments/componants are present including: Large Pop-Up Castle in exceptional, Fine condition; Tipped-in card folder enclosing red accordion pop-up with noisemaker but no noise produced; Pop-Up biplane, intact, Fine , unused condition; Chelsea Girls promo disc, intact with strong spring attached; Dodecahedron dipyramid with internal string detached from sculpture but remains attached to gutter with original adhesive dot. 2 of the 3 original pages seals are opened. Orig. internal rubber band is intact. ; Lou Reed flex-record firmly attached with center dot complete (not punched out); AW triptych fold-out photo with pink nose & all moble nose flaps intact in fine, unused condition; Hunt's Tomatoe paste pop-up can intact, in fine, unused condition; On "Big Surprise" page, all 8 of the stickers (4 stamped "Andy Warhol") intact with all perforations unblemished; the balloon is scrivelled & stuck between the final 2 pages which can be opened more than half-way -- the balloon rests close to the spine & you can see its "carcass" shadow on the blank page verso. There is no plastic sleeve or publisher's postcard. Foil wraps in excellent shape; contents very tight, clean, without names nor marks. No cracks or looseness. The only blemish & this appears to have been the result in the binding process that glued the sewn signatures to the foil wraps. The first 5 pages have a "wavy-wrinkly " area, triangular shaped from the top edge reaching down about 4 inches along the gutter. This flaw completely disappears at the Cosi fan tutte page whiuch precedes the heavy Castle Pop-Up fold-out. Bascially, this book appears to have been very lightly handled & used (the pop-ups almost look new). Inside & out, this scarce Warhol item is in remarkable condition. Please "Ask Bookseller" if this is available before ordering. Size: 4to. Seller Inventory # 2741

About this Item: NY: Random House, 1967., 1967. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Stated First Edition. Includes All 10 Multiples. The book is bound in illustrated wraps and measures 11" x 8.5". This is a notoriously fragile book and is prone to condition issues. I have classified the book as Near FINE with some surface wear to the wraps and starting to some of the pages but fully intact. The multiples are in fantastic shape with the exception of the balloon that is stuck between two pages. Overall, this is a highly collectible copy of one of Warhol's better know works that is rarely found with all the multiples intact. This is a stated first edition of Andy Warhol's classic artist book "Index"published by the Random House, NY in 1967. The book is a compilation of interviews, art inserts, pop-ups, photographs, recording discs, and descriptions of life at the Factory. Designed as a children¿s book for grown up hipsters, "Index" is an important Warhol document and an absolutely iconic publication of the psychedelic era in New York. The photographs are by Billy Name and other Warhol co-conspirators with the assistance of Stephen Shore, Paul Morrissey, Ondine, and Nico. All 10 multiples are present and are as follows: pop-up castle, fold-out accordion, pop-up airplane, Chelsea Girls disc, a paper sculpture attached to the book with string, Lou Reed record, a fold-out sheet with nose and overlays, a pop-up Hunt's Tomato Paste can, a tear-out warm water sheet, and the infamous balloon that is stuck between two pages like every other copy of this book. Cited in "The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century" by Andrew Roth. Seller Inventory # 000478

About this Item: Random House, New York, 1967. Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. [56pp, 10 attachments]; sewn signatures glued in illustrated foil card covers; 283 x 219 x 90 mm (at spine). The comparably fragile card issue with all original components, including: [1] Biplane popup (intact); [2] The Chelsea Girls promo disc mounted on spring (intact); [3] card dodecahedron sculpture with internal elastic intact (mobile detached from string, which however remains attached to gutter with original adhesive dot) with 2 of the 3 adhesive page seals opened (as usual); [4] Velvet Underground flexidisc with Lou Reed portrait (intact & unpunched); [5] Andy Warhol triptych foldout photo (with all 4 mobile nose wings intact); [6] tipped card folder enclosing Hunt's Tomato Paste can popup (intact); [7] second tipped card folder enclosing the elaborate popup castle, coach & menacing troop, labelled "We're attacked constantly" (intact); [8] third tipped card folder enclosing red accordian popup with noisemaker (intact, though silent); [9] 5 of 8 perforated sticker fixatives headed 'For a Big Surprise!!!' (two labelled Andy Warhol); and [10] balloon (fusing adjoining leaves, as usual). Enclosures are all free of folds & wear; all popups in full working order. Original cover price sticker removed (leaving residue). Lacking the original printed plastic security sleeve & accompanying publisher's postcard. Ink name neat at head of ffe. Bump at lower tip. Seller Inventory # 000402

About this Item: New York: Random House, 1967. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Hardcover. An artists' book. Unpaginated. A b/w illustrated cover done in lenticular printing. (I had to look it up, too: "Lenticular printing is a technology in which a lenticular lens is used to produce images with an illusion of depth." [Wikipedia]) Black-and-white photographs with a number of inserts. This copy has: (1) pop-up castle, (2) Hunt's tomato can; (3) red accordion; (4) polygon for folding (without the elastic band) with black string separate; (5) Lou reed picture disc; (6) airplane pop-up; (7) Chelsea girls wheel on a spring; (8) rainbow nose with fold-out pages; (9) about 4 of the eight rectangular tear-offs,; and (10) a balloon, which has melted and pasted two pages together, but at the hinge only. The rear inner hinge is cracked. The pages between which the polygon was inserted were roughly opened with minor damage to the edge. The Lou Reed record was removed from its tab but is present. A very good plus copy. Seller Inventory # MD-2
