Subtitled "A true account of the last exciting encounters with redskins in Hamilton, Comanche, Brown, Erath and adjoining counties, as recorded by E. L. Deaton, a Texan of pioneer days, and republished by one of his descendants - Floyd J. Holmes, Fort Worth, Texas." This rare history was first published in 1894. In the introduction, Deaton states his desire to record the hardships of Texan frontiersmen and women and conflicts with local Indian tribes, as no one else at the time was doing so, and he felt qualified as a reliable source as he personally knew many of the settlers involved in these conflicts and lived in the area at the time. Each chapter is composed of stories of Comanche and Kiowa attacks on settlers. Howes D-179. ; Oblong Small 8vo 7½" - 8" tall; 161 pp. Bookseller Inventory # 013098

Item Description: Fort Worth, TX: Pioneer Publishing Co., The Bunker Press, 1927. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. 2nd Edition. VERY RARE! Subtitled: "A True Account of the Last Exciting Encounters With the Redskins in Hamilton, Comanche, Brown, Erath and Adjoining Counties, as Recorded by E.L. Deaton, a Texan of Pioneer Days, and Republished by One of His Descendents--" Originally published by E.L. Deaton in 1886, this exciting and valuable primary account of life and early cattle ranching on the Texas frontier tells harrowing tales of Indian depredations and horse-stealing raids in an area that was located smack-dab on the Old Comanche War Trail to Mexico. An extremely rare title! Octavo, gilt-stamped dark-red flexible boards, 161 pp. Gilt title on front board faded, otherwise fine for its age and rarity. Contents pages clean and bright, unfoxed. Ex-Mary Coutts Library, Texas Christian University, Fort Worth, having unobtrusive library markings yet very modest wear. Front hinge tender, as expected from age, but otherwise virtually unused and unread, apparently. Contains the pencilled notation that this book was acquired on 6-11-53 from Texas rare book dealer Wm. Morrison, for $5.00! Born in 1843, author E.L. Deaton came to Texas in 1853 and bore first-hand witness to many of the epochal happenings there during the Republic and early statehood times. A primary research source for the Texas frontier era spanning the 1850s thru the 1870s, and of value to researchers, historians and indeed everyone interested in pioneer Texas and Western history. Just this single copy! You'll LOVE this book--order it today!. Bookseller Inventory # 120309.jmil.001
