Item Description: 2015. Hardcover. Book Condition: New. 227 About the book:- In India the coalition governments have mainly been the result of multi-party system. As sometimes, a single political party was able to muster clear-cut majority in the Legislative Assembly, the parties were obliged to seek support and cooperation of other groups to form the government. Sometimes coalitions are also formed before the elections and a number of political parties chalk out an agreed programme and contest elections on the basis of the programme from a common platform. India has had the experience of coalition governments in the State as well as the Centre in recent times. As the author analyses the coalitions in India he has to keep in mind the background of various experiments of coalitions of different parts. The present volume admirably addresses the issues which are of considerable contemporary relevance. As we have seen the emergence of regional political parties because the regional political leaders wanted to assert their importance and the feeling of regionalism has been very strong in India and has manifested itself in the shape of demand for a separated state, inter-state disputes and sometimes even succession from the union. The regional feelings of regionalism in India have been partly due to feelings of neglect and discrimination among certain areas or sections and partly due to the growing political awareness of the henceforth-backward people. The composition of Cabinet, the nature of its working, the style of the Prime Minister/Chief Minister, the character of electoral politics and the party system, and even the composition of the legislature to a limited extent are likely to be affected by the nature of coalition politics. The present volume is going to be of great topical value to the students of Political Science, researchers, readers as well as Indian politicians. About The Author:- Dr. Mouneshwara Srinivasrao is presently working as Assistant Professor and H.O.D., Dept. of Political Science, University College of Arts, Tumkur University, Tumkur, Karnataka. He has put up 5 years of teaching experience in the UG as well as PG level. He has published 25 articles in reputed journals and presented several papers at many national and international seminar and conferences. He has successfully completed one ICSSR Research Project. He organised several seminar, conference, workshops, special lectures, mock parliaments and debate competitions and worked as Coordinator of UGC Remedial Coaching for SC/ST/OBC and Minority students. Now he is working with additional charge as Special Officer at Tumkur University, Tumkur as an administrative service. Areas of specializations are Indian Government and Politics, Human Rights, Public Administration and International Relations. Contents:- Contents:- Acknowledgements Foreword 1. Item Description: 2015. Hardcover. Book Condition: New. 326 About the book:-, This study, focusing on the nuclear-politics interface, examines which political party should be given credit, and how much in shaping India's nuclear weapons policy. Taking into account the views of the Congress, BJP and CPI {M), the study concludes that there is no single mother of India's nuclear bomb. In the process, it approves the assumption t hat national political leadership, not the political parties, is paramount in India's nuclear weapons decision making. Furthermore, nuclear policy does not change with the change of government, and changes despite the same party forms the government again. The study highlights how the issue of nuclear weapon has an awesome appearance on the Indian political scene during the last six-decade. Item Description: Cambridge University Press 0. Softcover. Book Condition: New. Dynastic politics, usually presumed to be the antithesis of democracy, is a routine aspect of politics in many modern democracies. This book introduces a new theoretical perspective on dynasticism in democracies, using original data on twenty-first-century Indian parliaments. It argues that the roots of dynastic politics lie at least in part in modern democratic institutions - states and parties - which give political families a leg-up in the electoral process. It also proposes a rethinking of the view that dynastic politics is a violation of democracy, showing that it can also reinforce some aspects of democracy while violating others. Finally, this book suggests that both reinforcement and violation are the products, not of some property intrinsic to political dynasties, but of the institutional environment from which those dynasties emerge. Prologue 1. Democratic dynasties: state, party and family in contemporary Indian politics Kanchan Chandra 2. The `old regime` confronts democracy Lloyd I. Rudolph and Susanne H. Rudolph 3. A sign of backwardness? Where dynastic leaders are elected in India Francesca Jensenius 4. Dynasticism across Indian political parties Adam Ziegfeld 5. Women, dynasties and democracy in India Amrita Basu 6. Reservations and dynastic politics Simon Chauchard 7. Item Description: Cambridge University Press, 2002. Softcover. Book Condition: New. The 1930s was a critical decade in Indian politics. It saw the Congress Party begin its rise to political dominance, while Indian ?big business? strengthened its position in the economy. This book seeks to analyse the response of India?s most important indigenous businessmen to the growth of political nationalism. Dr Markovits? study falls into three parts: an analysis of the structure of the business class, revealing its basic heterogeneity and lack of political unity; an examination of the impact of the Depression of the 1930s on the fortunes of Indian businessmen and on government economic policy; and a survey of the uneasy and changing relationship between businessmen and Congress at a time of political turmoil and realignment. Drawing heavily on the private papers of prominent businessmen as well as on a wealth of official sources, this is the first systematic study, on an all-India scale, of the political attitude of big business during the final and most crucial phase of the nationalist struggle. Given increasing prominence of businessmen in Indian politics after 1920 an understanding of their behaviour is fundamental to our view of the overall pattern of Indian nationalist politics. All those interested in the rise of anti-colonial movements and in patterns of capitalist development in Third World countries should also find matter for thought in this sensitive and unusual study. Contents Preface Abbreviations Introduction 1. Indian capital 2. Crisis and opportunities 3. Business, Civil Disobedience and the reforms 1931?1935 4. The turning point: capitalists and Congressmen 1935?1937 5. Business, the central government and the Congress 1937?1939 6. Item Description: Cambridge University Press, 2002. Softcover. Book Condition: New. The 1930s was a critical decade in Indian politics. It saw the Congress Party begin its rise to political dominance, while Indian ‘big business’ strengthened its position in the economy. This book seeks to analyse the response of India’s most important indigenous businessmen to the growth of political nationalism. Dr Markovits’ study falls into three parts: an analysis of the structure of the business class, revealing its basic heterogeneity and lack of political unity; an examination of the impact of the Depression of the 1930s on the fortunes of Indian businessmen and on government economic policy; and a survey of the uneasy and changing relationship between businessmen and Congress at a time of political turmoil and realignment.
