Item Description: Pub. Sampson Lowe. 1885, 1885. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. pp.44 plus 44 fine chromolithographed plates by the author. In original gilt decorated boards. Some marks on covers. Spine re-laid and skilful repairs to bottom corner of rear board. Corners of boards were repaired to same standard at the same time and the internal hinges (and binding overall) strengthened. Title page with a little foxing and plate one with a few fine spots (maybe paint) all other plates are generally very clean with some of the earlier ones with finger marks to borders. Bottom edges of boards rubbed. Overall a very good copy of this scarce book. Folio. Isabella Simpson was born in Scotland. She spent some of her life in New Zealand and after marrying moved to Hawaii. From an early age she showed artistic promise and painted flowers both in New Zealand and later in Hawaii. This was the first book to illustrate flowers from Hawaii in colour. Scarce. Bookseller Inventory # 38480

Spine repaired with new black endpapers. Fine. Original ownership inscription of Annie B. Gallagher, purchased in Honolulu in 1892 for $11.00. Subsequently given to a convent in Oakland, CA in 1916. Forbes states that this work was an early example of a perfect binding and as such copies tend to be found loose in their bindings with damage to the plates and leaves, which makes this copy very rare and desirable.OCLC Number: 964603565.
