This is an analysis, based on the excavations at Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro, of a highly evolved urban discipline and economy, spread over a larger area than any of the known pre-classical civilizations, from about 2500 to 1500 B.C. After introductory sections, Sir Mortimer gives an account of the principal known sites. He then considers burials and skeletal types, military matters, commerce and transport, farming and fauna, arts and crafts, the Indus script, and the Indus religions. After a section on chronology he sums up the present state of knowledge. The twenty-six pages of plates contain illustrations of sites and objects brought to light during excavations. They are an impressive testimony of the civilization and art of the Indus Age. The new edition brings the material up to date as far as it is possible to do so. Since 1953, much exploration and some excavation in India and Pakistan have thrown new light on the Indus Civilization and its sequel. The results of this recent work are still largely unpublished, but their general trend has been indicated by brief additions and amendments. Size: 8vo.
