About this Item: Griffith and Farran, London, 1867. Victorian games, music, toys, and prayers: William H.G. Kingston's guide for parents and nurses on entertaining and educating young children, with a delightful frontispiece depicting children at play. Kate Greenaway (1846?1901) provided this heartwarming image of children dancing, playing music, reading, and sewing in the home with their guardian looking over them ? this frontispiece being => Greenaway's first illustration for a published book. She quickly became one of the most beloved and influential illustrators of her era. Kingston's "practical hints" for a happy nursery are further illustrated by three unsigned black-and-white plates and several in-text illustrations demonstrating various toys for children. These are accompanied by prayers, and hymns and songs with music. Binding: Publisher's green cloth, front board with gilt lettering and floral centerpiece within decorative black-stamped border, spine with similar gilt floral decoration and rear board with decorative border in blind. Provenance: From the library of Ellery Yale Wood, a collector of children's books and young adult literature, with her name inked on front free endpaper; endpaper also with pencilled signature of E.H. Jay. 12mo (18.7 cm, 7.375"). Frontis, xviii, 183, [1], 32 (adv.) pp.; illus. Thomson, Kate Greenaway: A Catalogue of the Kate Greenaway Collection, 116. Bound as above, corners bumped and edges rubbed, a little; spine ends remarkably intact, unrubbed and unpulled with all gilt very bright. Inscriptions as above, with additional early signature on front pastedown now effaced. Pages with light soiling to top and fore-edges, and very occasionally a small light spot elsewhere (with a few to title-page and frontispiece); minor foxing to endpapers and publisher's catalogue (only). => An attractive copy of Greenaway's book-form debut. About this Item: 0, 1867. or, how to make a Nursery Happy. With practical hints to parents and nurses on the moral and physical traing of children. London: Griffith and Farran, 1867; xviii, 183pp., [32pp. catal.] with frontis. and other illustrations, and some musical notation; publisher's brick-red cloth, decorated in gilt and black; extremities partly worn, very slight rubbing & short split (c.5mm.) at head of spine, early ownership entry on fr.f.e.p. * Of great interest in itself as an early practical guide in the field of what would now be classified as kindergarten and pre-school education - drawing heavily on German sources - by an author better remembered for his children's stories, this volume is now mostly sought after because its frontispiece is Kate Greenaway's first published book illustration.
