Item Description: n.p., ca. 1900]., [Nagasaki, Yokohama:, 1900. Two vols. 1) Oblong 8vo. format (7.75 x 6 in.), w/ 11 leaves of thick card stock bound in accordion-style format, w/ 22 hand-coloured tipped-in albumen photos (5.3 x 3.6 in.). Lacquered covers, gilt decorations of geisha on a lake, w/ carved ivory head, and boatman polling across the lake, w/ trees in the background (minor edgewear, some thumbsoiling, a few hinges repaired), the images are still clear but there is occasional light fading & soiling, still a very nice example; 2) 4to. [64 pp]., ruled paper, w/ 89 hand-coloured tipped-in albumen photos (5.5 x 3.5 in.), many labeled lower corner of image, most with ink annotations below. Contemporary quarter-calf ledger book, leather corners (w/o spine, couple leaves cropped, occasional damage to a few images, some over-exposed), still a G- exemplar. These wonderful photo albums were assembled during Hallmark's service in the U.S. Navy from 1895 to 1905 in the South Pacific, and Asia. These albums focus on Japan, and contain views of Yokohama, the port of Yokohama, the Sakawa Bridge, geishas playing mandolins, seagoing Chinese Junks, Bushido sword practice, Rickshaws, transplanting rice, drying sheets of paper, Fish Peddlers, Japanese tumblers who came aboard the ships to entertain sailors, other street scenes, Lotus Pond, Kamakura, Ymeimon Gate, Nikko, and many others. Many of the photos are similar images to those which were shot and hand-coloured for export by Tamamura and Kusakabe in the 19th and early 20th-centuries, some of them having the same titles, however these albums & photos do not have photographer's mark.
