Item Description: Hurd and Houghton, New York, 1869. Hardcover. Book Condition: Good. Later Printing. Former owner's name on ffep in pencil - "A. D. Warren / East Killingly, CT" owner of the A.D. Warren Thread company of Worcester, Mass. Contents are clean and tight in original light brown cloth binding, cloth is worn and rippled. chipped at spine ends, and gilt lettering at spine had rubbed away. Artist Francis B. Carpenter came to the White House in 1864 to create a painting to commemorate the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. He spent several months set up in the state dining room paintng and observing Lincoln at work and listening to the many anecdotes and recitations Lincoln was famous for. Carpenter also gathered information from insiders, and from published reminiscences by Lincoln associates like William H. Herndon. In bringing all this information together, Carpenter added his own impressions of the president giving us a wonderful peek behind the curtain at this iconic figure. Bookseller Inventory # 39648

This copy has an advertisement for a contemporary newspaper called "The Independent" pasted over the front pastedown. Writing on the front free endpaper describes this advertisement, as does a laid-in letter. Worn at the spine ends and the corners. Boards are rubbed. Short tear at the rear joint. 1" piece chipped from the front free endpaper. A second free endpaper (just before the half title page) appears to have been excised. Item Description: Hurd and Houghton, New York, 1877. Hardcover. Small 8vo. Green pebble-grained blind-ruled cloth with gilt spine lettering. vii, 359pp. Very good. Very mild edgewear only, else internally near fine. A tight and quite attractive "Twenty-Sixth Thousand" later printing. First published in 1866 as "Six Months at the White House with Abraham Lincoln. The Story of a Picture," all printings post 1868 bear this altered title. Front pastedown bears the often-seen neatly-mounted 4¼" X 7¼" printed handbill advertising "The Independent," a New York religious newspaper, listing at bottom steel-engraved prints and finally "Carpenter's Book, of 'President Lincoln at the White House,' 360pp." A sharp copy, with giltstamped spine bright. Carpenter (1830-1900) was the American painter best remembered for his painting "First Reading of the Emancipation Proclamation of Abraham Lincoln," and this is his account of his experiences at the White House.
