Item Description: Victor Gollancz, London., 1940. First edition. Octavo. 188 pages. Only 1000 copies were printed. The other essays are "Charles Dickens" and "Boys' Weeklies". From the library of Geoffrey Tillotson, Professor of Nineteenth Century Studies at Birkbeck, with his ownership signature, dated July 1946, on front free endpaper. The essay on Dickens has a few pencilled marginalia by Tillotson; his particular interest was Thackeray and when Orwell has the temerity to make a pronouncement regarding Thackeray (on page 39) he writes, ''absurd''.Gilt titles on spine dull to the point of invisibility. Covers with surface marking. Good. No dustwrapper. Bookseller Inventory # ORWELLGE029117

Item Description: Gollancz, 1940. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. First Edition, first impression scarce: a small print run and an unknown number of copies were destroyed in an air raid in WWII. Very Good: firm binding (with a slight lean) in clean black cloth; gently pushed to the head of the spine and some rubbing to the heel and bottom-edge; tanning to the edge of the page block; the very faintest trace of foxing to the endpapers; a few minor marks internally, else bright, crisp and clean. Lacking the dustwrapper. All orders are sent very carefully wrapped in bubble wrap and sturdy cardboard. Bookseller Inventory # D186

Item Description: Victor Gollancz Ltd, London, 1940. Cloth. Book Condition: Very Good. SIGNED BY GEORGE ORWELL on the front free endpaper. A solid copy to boot of the 1940 true 1st edition of this uncommon collection of Orwell essays (consisting of 3 lengthy pieces --"Charles Dickens", "Boys' Weeklies" and "Inside the Whale"). Tight and VG in its dark cloth, with rubbing to the spine lettering, light spotting --and a bit of minor staining-- at the panels and just a touch of foxing to the endsheets. Orwell's signature of course is legendarily elusive and, given his relatively short life (1903-1950) and the major impact his career had in the world of 20th century literature, is extremely sought-after. Only a very small handful of 20th century authors command comparable respect in the rare book world. Bookseller Inventory # 14507

Item Description: London: Gollancz, 1940, 1940. Octavo. Original black cloth, titles to spine gilt. With the dust jacket. Housed in a quarter morocco green solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. Pages very lightly tanned as usual, attractive bookplate to the front pastedown, but an exceptionally nice copy in the lightly marked and somewhat faded dust jacket. First edition, first impression, one of 1,000 copies printed. Orwell may well have been the finest essayist England produced in the entire century. Despite his radical credo in his essays he remains the last of the great Victorian prose stylists. Besides the title essay, this book prints his notable studies of Charles Dickens and boy's weeklies. A scarce book in any condition - copies as nice as this are rare. Bookseller Inventory # 81858
