Very beautiful book. Son of Dionysius v. d. Wynpersse, lived 1759-1842, became professor of philosophy at Groningen in 1787. ?Two years later he resigned to become minister in Amsterdam . When his ageeing father began to need help with his teaching duties? Samuel was appointed in Leiden. He supplemented his fathers textbooks with his own textbook on moral philosophy. ?The manual is divided into a general and a specific part dealing with our duties to God, our mind, body, and our fellow men. Willem Jacob 'S Gravesande (26 September 1688 ¿ 28 February 1742) Was A Dutch Lawyer And Natural Philosopher, Chiefly Remembered For Developing Experimental Demonstrations Of The Laws Of Classical Mechanics. As Professor Of Mathematics, Astronomy, And Philosophy At Leiden University, He Helped To Propagate Isaac Newton's Ideas In Continental Europe. In 1715, 'S Gravesande Visited London As Part Of A Dutch Delegation Sent To Welcome The Hanoverian Succession In Great Britain. In London, 'S Gravesande Met Both King George I And Isaac Newton, And Was Elected A Fellow Of The Royal Society.In 1717 He Became Professor Of Mathematics And Astronomy In Leiden. From That Position, He Was Instrumental In Introducing Newton's Work To The Netherlands. 'S Gravesande's Main Scientific Work Is Physices Elementa Mathematica, Experimentis Confirmata, Sive Introductio Ad Philosophiam Newtonianam ("Mathematical Elements Of Natural Philosophy, Confirmed By Experiments; Or, An Introduction To Newtonian Philosophy"), Published In Leiden In 1720. In That Book, He Laid The Foundations For The Teaching Of Newtonian Mechanics Through Experimental Demonstrations. He Presented His Work Before Audiences That Included Voltaire And Albrecht Von Haller. The Book Was Soon Translated Into English By John Theophilus Desaguliers, Curator Of Experiments For The Royal Society. In 1722 He Published The Results Of A Series Of Experiments In Which Brass Balls Were Dropped From Varying Heights Onto A Soft Clay Surface. He Found That A Ball With Twice The Speed Of Another Would Leave An Indentation Four Times As Deep, From Which He Concluded That The Correct Expression For The "Live Force" Of A Body In Motion (What Is Modernly Called Its "Kinetic Energy") Is Proportional To Its Mass And The Square Of Its Velocity. About this Item: ex Typographia Remondini, Bassani, 1749. Contemporary vellum. Condition: Very Good. First Italian edition. 1st Italian Edition. 8vo (17.5 x 12 cm). Contemporary vellum. Collation [28], 244; [5], 246-571, [21] pp. + 18 folding engraved plates. The binding has worm hole at bottom of front cover at hinge. Covers have circles with internal geometric lines; some soiling present on front cover, more so on back. Textblock has worming in clear areas at base of spine and about 2 cm in from fore edge with no loss to text. All edges of text block have decorative red, blue and brown streaks. Internal condition of text is very good, clean and bright. This is the first Italian edition of Gravesande's student text book of Newton's physics and the most influential introduction to Newton before 1750. Although the work was published in 1723, it was not accepted in Catholic Italy until 1749. Gravesande was a Dutch philosophe and mathematician, member of the Royal Society of London and laid down the foundations for teaching physics. He was the most influential exponent of Newtonian science outside England. This work is an abridged viersion of his "Physices Elemnta Mathematica" and is the first textbook of Newtonian Physics.
