Published in the Brompton Library series of instructional books for young people. The author worked for the Outward Bound Sea School, having served in minesweepers in WWII and sailed in the ill-fated 'Pamir'. The author deals with sailing methods, theory and principle of sailing, sea and weather lore, points in buying a boat and preparing her for sea, navigation, knots, seamanlike safety precautions, the law of the sea, the merits of various sailing rigs and includes a glossary of sailing terms. A useful appendix gives the orders for taking command of life-boat under oars, which can be adapted for any boat under oars. Internally the book is sound and clean, with David Cobb's distinctive and clear illustrations. The unclipped jacket is sunned on the spine and margins, with some small tears and minor losses. 143 p.
