Contents heavily foxed and browned with a stain affecting bottom front corner of most pages (content not affected). Preliminary pages heavily chipped. Book condition: In very good condition with overall light soiling and extremities which are rubbed and bumped Yellow endsheets are soiled and have a few spots and a contemporary bookplate. A very small piece of the front pastedown has been carefully cut away from foot near hinge. Pages are moderately foxed and offset. Scarce in original cloth, P. Hawker's "Instructions to Young Sportsmen in All that Relates to Guns and Shooting", includes in this ninth edition, chapters on the hunting and shooting of North America. Important names like William T. Porter and John J. Audubon contribute stories, descriptions, and advice on such things as "Barking Off Squirrels", and "The Canvas-Back Duck". There are twelve stunning illustrations scattered throughout the book and of course the orignial maxims from Hawker on everything from dressing for the hunt to cooking it right. Alden Weir and bears the book plate of his son-in-law George Page Ely. The book has been professionally rebound (perhaps by book binder Caro Weir Ely) using its original boards and consequently is tight and square. It is basically clean and internally unmarked, but there is a faint pencil name (E. E. Mitchell?) on the title page. It is rubbed to rounding at the corners with a few light bumps. It has gray end papers and 459 (plus 12 pages of ads), clear, lightly foxed pages illustrated with black & white plates bound in red cloth covered, blind stamped boards with gilt titles and drawings on the spine and front. Inscribed by the publisher on the front endpaper and with a 1-page ALS from Porter to the publisher, 27 May 1846, making short references to grouse and deer hunting and promising "in the course of next week I hope to finish all the copy of your edition of Hawker." An important contributor to the early literature of sport in America, Porter was a journalist devoted to hunting, angling, and the turf (see DAB). Phillips, p. 163: "More than half the book on American shooting--birds and big game." Original gilt-stamped decorated red cloth (chipped at spine-head), with gilt sporting ornaments on the spine; several period newspaper clippings, including a review of this edition, affixed to front endpapers, else very good.
