Condition: Very Good. hardcover (1847) in original marbleized boards with leather tips and columned spine decorated with gold gilt showing title, prefatory notice after title page is dated January 21, 1847, 72 plates per contents page, binding is strong in spite of a partial separation in the front inner hinge, rear inner hinge well preserved, bookplate of Frank Johnstone Mitchell applied inside front board displaying his family crest coat of arms, In 1880 Mitchell and his wife Elizabeth Hardcourt had rebuilt a medieval preaching cross located in the churchyard at the All Saints' Church Llanfrechfa Monmouthshire in memory of Elizabeth's father John Etherington Welch Rolls High Sheriff of Monmouthshire 1842 and co- founder of the Monmouth agricultural show in Wales, opposite the Mitchell bookplate on the FEP is a 2nd bookplate of research scholar Charles Grant Ellis dated 1953, plates show some foxing spots with some ghosting images to adjacent page, small transparent Ellis family label applied under Ellis bookplate.

They are predominantly by the Society?s favourite architect and official adviser, William Butterfield. First series only (a second series followed). 4to. (8)pp, (71) engr plates (some folding, numbered to 72, but nos. 38/39 relate to one double-page plate), each with facing leaf of text, also one leaf of publisher?s adverts (at end). Original full calf, neatly rebacked with matching spine. Slight browning at outer margin of plates, and occasional offsetting from plates on facing text leaves (as often with this book). Mid nineteenth century engraved armorial bookplate of Charles Robert Scott Murray, Danesfield, Bucks., (a member of the Cambridge Camden Society). Subsequent ink ownership inscription of A.H.Stanton, Hambledon Rectory (presumably Father Arthur Henry Stanton (1839-1913), Anglican clergyman (see ODNB)), with a note in his hand ?purchased at Danesfield sale 1898?.

During his long career he taught at the University of Edinburgh School of Architecture, Canterbury School of Architecture, and University of Nottingham. Later in his life he was the Vice-President and Honorary Librarian of the Royal Institute of British Architects, and contributed and edited the "Journal of Architecture".
