Ettelson (1883-1975) was born in Mobile, Alabama and attended the University of Cincinnati, Hebrew Union College, where he was ordained in 1904, the University of Chicago, and Yale. He was a Navy chaplain in WWI, and rabbi in Hartford, CT, Philadelphia, and Memphis. In 1932, he debated Clarence Darrow on the necessity of religion. (EJ, 2007) Ex library.
