Item Description: Harper and Brothers, NY, 1951. Hardcover. Later printing. This is the March 1951 printing of the first edition, as per the Harper code letters on the copyright page. A hardcover book in very good condition with a dustjacket in good condition. The book is clean, tight, and unmarked; its only flaw is some fading at the crown and heel of the spine corresponding to where the dustjacket was chipped. The jacket is edgeworn with multiple small chips and creases; the largest chip is at the top of the spine and extends abount an inch downwards affecting the author's name in the titling, Early printing of Graham's classic work, issued two years after the first printing and containing the same text (as opposed to the later revised editions). Graham, one of the giants of 20th century investing, was the Founding Father of value investing. His best-known protogee is Warren Buffett. Graham's first major work was the textbook SECURITY ANALYSIS (co-written with David Dodd). THE INTELLIGENT INVESTOR is a more accessible version of his thought. All of the early printings are scarce. Item Description: Harper & Brothers, New York, 1950. Hardcover. Book Condition: Good. 1st Edition. THE INTELLIGENT INVESTOR - A Book of Practical Counsel, by BENJAMIN GRAHAM. Published by Harper & Brothers Publishers, New York. FIRST EDITION, likely Third Printing. "Copyright 1949" is the only date stated on the copyright page, and there is the letter code "A-Z" at the bottom of the copyright page. Though Harper & Brothers usually stated "First Edition" in its books at this time, this was one of the exceptions; i.e. it did not state "first edition" but instead simply used its letter code for identification. It is presumed that the code "D-Y" (April 1949) was the first printing, with a second 1949 printing being lettered "K-Y" (November 1949). This "A-Z" (January, 1950) is, I believe, the third printing. You can easily find Harper & Brothers Letter Codes online. Hardcovers, 5.5" x 8.5", 276 pages. Original NAVY BLUE CLOTH COVERED BOARDS with GILT TITLING TO THE SPINE. and Harper & Brothers blind stamped colophon on the front cover. This is the same binding as the First Printing (later printings had different bindings). NO DUSTJACKET. Condition: The covers have some wear to their spine ends and corner tips, rubbing to their folds and edges, and some rubbing to the spine, but are still solid and doing their job well; there is a bb-size stain to the top page edges (page edges of the closed book); there is a previous owner's name/address/phone rubber-stamped at the bottom of the front pastedown; there is clear tape reinforcement neatly applied to the gutter edge of the title-page and its facing page, and to the dedication page and the facing "Contents" page - the tape does not touch text, it extends for approx. 1/4" along the gutter of all 4 pages; there is underlining in red pencil to sections of 24 pages; there is NO noticeable foxing or toning, the pages are bright and clear. Overall a complete, solid, presentable, used copy. VERY RARE, EARLY "A-Z" (January 1950) PRINTING of this BIBLE of STOCK MARKET INVESTING. The only earlier printing I found for sale was a "K-Y" (November 1949 - probable second printing), selling for $6,500 with DJ. As of this writing, I found several LATER (i.e. not as scarce) but still early printings for sale online, including a "C-A" (March 1951) printing for $3,500 with dj, a "C-A" (March 1951) printing for $1,950 without dj; (please note that both of these "C-A" editions have the much less desirable LATER BINDING); and a "D-C" (April 1953) printing for $2,022 with no dj, and also with the later binding. As BENJAMIN GRAHAM would say, be an intelligent investor and do your own research! And as I would add, Have Fun doing it!. Bookseller Inventory # 000127

Item Description: HARPER & BROS 1949 C-A, NY, 1949. HB GRAY/RED. Book Condition: VG. JACKET: TORN. Extremely scarce first edition 1949 C-A. THIS COPY IS A LATER PRINTING PRINTED IN 1949 a classic author on the Stock Market. Book has general shelf wear, rubbed extremities, lightly bumped corners, previous owner name and date on inner front board, "Windgate E. Hannah 8/28/51" Mr. Hannah was associated with Waynesville, N.C. Kirchofer & Arnold Associates, Inc. Investment Securiies, Insurance Building Raleigh N.C., New York & Charlotte, age toned endpages, slight foxing on endpages. Dust jacket has general wear, scotch tape on inner spine, chip in top front edge, creased, closed tears, sun faded spine, rear top edge has a 2.5" X 1" tear. They did however print a 'letter-letter' printing code on the copyright page-a standard procedure for Harper at that time, and known to Bookseller's as the "Harper Printing Code'. The first letter was the month of the year ('A' being January, 'B' February etc) and the second was the Year. Google Harper Printing Code and you will find a table showing the letters Harper used until they abandoned the system. In this case 'D-Y' means April, 1949. The Book was copyrighted in May, 1949, and obviously the original print run done up in the month before. That is because the SECOND EDITION did not come out until 1959, so that technically speaking, all PRINTINGS before then are FIRST EDITIONS, even though they might also be LATER PRINTINGS. All PRINTINGS of the Original Edition are collectible, but the most desirable is the First Printing (which this is). There is some confusion about this sometimes, as we Booksellers typically use First Edition and First Printing pretty much interchangeably much of the time DATE PUBLISHED: 1949 C-A EDITION: 276.
