First edition. Pp. x, 385. 3 maps, one folding. Extensive notes, appendices, bibliography and index. Dark blue cloth, gilt-lettered spine. A very fine and bright copy with plain grey dust jacket. A detailed and scholarly study of the legal system employed by Spain in the 18th century throughout its American colonies in an attempt to streamline the existing inefficient system. Includes coverage of the four departments of government which it formally recognized. Included is the translation from the Spanish of the Ordinance of Intendants for New Spain, outlining the provisions of the system, and the function and powers of the intendants. The ordinances for different colonies varied slightly. The Mexican legal code was chosen by the author to translate because it is more voluminous that the other ordinances for Spanish America. Very scarce in this condition.
