Item Description: GRIN Publishing, Germany, 2009. Paperback. Book Condition: New. 1. Auflage.. Language: German . Bookseller Inventory # APC9783640392681

Item Description: GRIN Publishing, 2009. Paperback. Book Condition: New. 1. Auflage.. Language: German . Doch was versteht man uberhaupt unter Selbstachtung ? Item Description: Simon De Colines, Paris, 1545. Leather. Book Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. First Edition. This is a scarce early printed edition of three famous works dating back over 450 years to 1545. It comes from the famous house of Simon de Colines, one of the great printers of Renaissance Europe, famed for his beautiful typefaces, superb craftsmanship and as one of the most important innovators of book design. It appears to have come from an old Carmelite monastery. Two of the works printed are by the great Roman statesman Cicero, and one now thought to be by another, unknown Roman author. This book is hardcover, bound in full calf leather, measuring 4 ½" by 3". It is in good antiquarian condition. The binding is firm; spine has been professionally rebacked in full leather; leather boards are smooth, some minor chipping, gilt rule at edges still present. Pages are printed in a beautiful italic, as would be expected from a Colines printing; ink notations and light underlining in an old hand; it is 448 pages long; i. E 218 leaves, with numbering on one side only, followed by six unnumbered leaves which include index. There are two old ownership inscriptions; the original one on the title page appears to be a Carmelite monastic ownership inscription. The first work is perhaps the most important. It is the Rhetorica ad Herennium ("Rhetoric: For Herennius") , formerly attributed to Cicero but of unknown authorship, it was responsible for "revolutionary advance in Roman literature and oratory" -- and in fact, it is probably due to his careful study of this work that Cicero achieved his goal of becoming the master spokesman of Republican Rome --- and probably why he suffered his terrible fate, since by his rhetoric he mobilized much of Rome against Julius Caesar and Marc Antony. The second work, De Inventione is a handbook for orators; and is credited with the first recorded use of the term "liberal arts" or artes liberales, though whether or not Cicero coined the term is unclear. The third work, De Partitione Oratoria Dialogus, Partitiones Oratoriae, or De Partitionbus Oratoriae, translated to be "On the subdivisions of oratory" – is a rhetorical treatise, written by Cicero. ; 32mo 4" - 5" tall; 448 pages.
