Item Description: Basileæ apud Mich. Isingrinium, 1540. 8vo, pp. [lvi], 615; set in italic throughout; printer's device on title; a good clean copy in contemporary English calf (see below) over pasteboard, corners worn, rebacked, and with later endpapers. Binding: Contemporary calf over pasteboard, the sides blindtooled with a distinctive roll featuring what look like two pairs of wheels. This book belonged to the late Graham Pollard, whose pencil note inside states: 'Roll not in Oldham EBSB [i.e. English Blind-stamped Bindings] but clearly English'. The origin of the binding is confirmed by the early provenance. Provenance: 16th century inscription on the title page of 'Ri: Jackson' with his motto 'Meritum men[s?] miseratio d[omi]ni', and his cost 18d. This is quite possibly the Richard Jackson who matriculated at Clare College, Cambridge, in 1567, and graduated in 1570, moving to Yorkshire to become master of Ingleton School in the West Riding. He is traditionally ascribed the authorship of a ballad on the battle of Flodden Field. There were, however, numerous other Richard Jacksons at Cambridge in the 16th century (though, curiously enough, hardly any at Oxford), and the owner could well be one of those. Adams V430; this edition not in BMC German. Bookseller Inventory # 17744

Item Description: Apud Seb. Gryphium ; Ex officina Roberti Stephani, 1546. Couverture rigide. - Apud Seb. [AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] New edition for the book of inventions Polydore Vergil and first edition for sentences of Cicero. beautiful impressions in Italics. Brands of the printer on the title page. The edition of Cicero is missing the English catalogs. De Rerum inventoribus was blacklisted in 1575 and reissued in redacted form and editing that we present is not so no. The first French translation seems to have appeared in 1527 as a copy of the University of Glasgow, although contradictory data gives 1528 as the date of the first French edition in Latin by Robert Etienne. Brunet gives 1499 for the date of the first édition.Demi Sheepskin blond marbled early nineteenth. Smooth back three jewels. Part of title and volume number beige. Lack paper keeps on upper cover of Volume 1 and the lower flat Volume 2, Interior very fresh. The book of inventions Vergil had a lasting success in the sixteenth century as it is the same type of books in the Renaissance, combining legends and historical sources. In the form of articles, it is treated with all kinds of inventions, salt, pottery, paintings, linen, music . The book is also a history of medicine and magic. Polydore Vergil naturally drew on much the Ancients. Polydore Vergil (1470-1555) was born and died in Urbino, after studying in Bologna and Padua, he became secretary to the Duke of Urbino and the chamberlain of Alexander VI. His first two writings made him famous and won great popularity 'Proverbiorum Libellus' and' De Rerum inventoribus', translated into French by 'The inventors of things. In 1501 the pope sent him to England, becoming intimate of H. Bookseller Inventory # 31817

Item Description: Kl.-8vo (168 x 105 mm). Mit Holzschnitt-Druckermarke auf Titel und Schlussblatt verso. [16] Bl., 578 S., [46] Bl. Index. Flexibler Pergamentband d. VD 16, V-759; vgl. B.IN.G. II, 2019; Simon, Bibliotheca gastronomica, 144. Rare Basel edition of this encyclopedic work on the origin of almost everything in daily use. In this important and influential treatise Vergil's curiosity is boundless, and his book covers an enormous range of topics. He investigates the origins of languages, nations, letters of the alphabets, poetry, drama, arithmetic, architecture, medicine and magic. First published in three books only in 1499 an expanded version was first published by Johannes Froben at Basel in 1521 with five additional chapters on the origins of Christian institutions. Vergil's attacks on facets of the Church were in similar vein to those of his follow humanist and friend Erasmus of Rotterdam. - Ms. notes on fly-leaves. - Contemporary limp vellum with flaps (ties gone, back somewhat stained).
