About this Item: Vienne, Thomae Trattner, 1761. Couverture rigide. Condition: Assez bon. Edition originale. Vienne, Thomae Trattner, 1761. Auenbrugger was the son of an innkeeper, and legend has it that it was his experience thumping wine casks to determine their fullness that led him to attempt an analogous diagnostic technique on his patients. It is certain that he was 'aided in developing this diagnostic technique by his musical knowledge (he wrote the libretto for a comic opera by Antonio Salieri), which enabled him to perceive differences in tone when the chest was tapped. For seven years he had observed the changes in tone caused by the diseases of the lungs or the heart in patients at the Spanish Hospital, checking and controlling his findings by dissections of corpses and by experiments. In the Inventum novum he presented his findings . Auenbrugger’s method permitted the determination of disease-caused changes in the lungs and heart of a live patient and thus gave a new, dependable foundation to the diagnosis of chest diseases' (DSB). His discovery met with little enthusiasm among his peers, but shortly before his death Napoleon’s physician Jean Nicolas Corvisart published a French translation of the book, substantially enlarged with his own observations which finally led to its general acceptance by the medical community. Some foxins at the beginning and the end and a restoration in the inner margin from pages 17 to 33 with some lack of letters on 6 pages (see pictures). Garrison-Morton 2672 ; Grolier Medicine 45 ; Norman 81 ; Heirs of Hippocrates 954 ; DSB I, page 332-333. Seller Inventory # ABE-1470485451026

About this Item: Hardcover. Wien, Johann Trattner, 1751, 8°, 95, (1) pp., frisches, breitrandiges Exemplar im älteren Halbpergamenteinband im Stil der Zeit mit rotem Rückenschildchen. "ONE OF THE GREAT CLASSIC OF MEDICINE" - First Edition, First Issue, without the errata on the verso of the last leaf (F 8), Complete! - - "Percussion of the abdomen as a means of distinguishing between tympanites and ascites dates back into antiquity, but percussion of the thorax starts with Leopold Auenbrugger whose Inventum Novum ex Percussione Thoracis Humani was published in I76i, the same year as Morgagni's great work on pathological anatomy. Auenbrugger's discovery of percussion was not entirely fortuitous for his father was an innkeeper, and he must have watched men tapping the wine barrels to find out how full or empty they were. - He was also a good musician and wrote the libretto of an opera (Antonio Salieri's - The chimney sweep) for which he was ennobled by the Empress in I784, so that evidently he had a good ear for sound. - Born at Gratz in I722, he studied medicine in Vienna under Van Swieten, graduating in 1752, and later became physician to the Spanish Hospital in Vienna where for seven years 'amid laborious and tedious exertions' he tested his method of percussion by dissections whenever possible and experimented on cadavers by filling the chest with water. Auenbrugger practised direct or immediate percussion, striking the patient's chest, covered by a shirt, with the finger tips of his gloved hand, first during normal breathing and then in full inspiration. He described the natural percussion sound in different parts of the chest, noting that over the space occupied by the heart the sound loses part of its natural clearness and becomes dull. His observations related mainly to lung disease, but two sections dealt with heart disease, namely section XLVI on dropsy of the pericardium and section XLVIII on aneurysm of the heart. He divided dropsy of the pericardium into serous and purulent varieties, noting a completely deadened percussion sound such as obtained by striking a fleshy limb. He also described the symptoms such as fainting, unequal pulse, swelling of the neck, and a tendency to fall asleep while sitting with the body inclined forwards, later described as the pillow sign by Blechmann. He defined aneurysm of the heart as a condition of overdistension of its cavities when they became unequal to propel their contents forward, and found a fleshy percussion sound over a considerable space in the region of the heart. - Auenbrugger's treatise proved to be premature as the anatomical conception of disease based on Morgagni took many years to permeate clinical medicine, so that percussion was virtually ignored by the majority of contemporary physicians, though Haller regarded it favourably and Stoil seems to have practised it in Vienna where others were hostile. - The treatise was twice republished in Latin and Roziere de la Chassagne included a French translation in his manual on pulmonary disease (I770), stating that though he had not used the method, it seemed free from danger! The credit of introducing percussion into clinical practice belongs to Corvisart who first learned of it from the works of Stoll whose aphorisms he had translated. He tested percussion in his clinic in Paris, described it in his famous textbook of i8o6, and published a second French translation of Auenbrugger's Inventum Novum in i8o8, together with his commentaries based on twenty years of experience." - "Auenbrugger's discovery had to wait half a century before it came into clinical use in Paris where it was soon overshadowed by Laennec's mediate auscultation which made him famous in his short lifetime. Nevertheless, percussion paved the way to physical diagnosis of heart disease, and as far as the heart is concerned Auenbrugger made fewer errors than Laennec. There is no doubt as to the important role of percussion of the heart in the preradiological era when great . Buch. Seller Inventory # 43622

About this Item: Vindobonae [Vienna]: Typis Joannis Thomae Trattner? 1761., 1761. 8vo, pp. 95, (1) errata. Some occasional light browning and foxing (as usual with this book), but a very good copy. Contemporary vellum over boards (lower portion of spine neatly repaired at an early date). Bookplates of Piergiorgio Borio. FIRST EDITION of the first book to suggest percussion of the chest as a diagnostic measure, ?one of the greatest of all medical classics? (Heirs of Hippocrates). ?With the introduction of percussion of the chest, which offered a new and dependable method of diagnosing diseases of the heart and lungs in living persons, Leopold Auenbrugger made the first advance in physical diagnosis since the age of Hippocrates. The son of an innkeeper, Auenbrugger had learned as a boy how to establish the level of wine in a cask by thumping the barrel? Applying the same technique to the human chest, he noticed that different sounds?tympanic, dull, or obscure, were produced when there was underlying disease of the heart or lungs in the interior of the chest. He verified his diagnoses by experiments on cadavers and by postmortems? (Grolier One Hundred). At first Auenbrugger's discovery attracted little attention, but he lived to see Corvisart's classic translation of the book in 1808, after which the value of percussion was universally recognised. G&M 2672. Lilly, Notable Medical Books, p. 127. Grolier, One hundred books famous in medicine, 45. Parkinson, Breakthroughs, 1761. Willius & Keys, Cardiac classics, 191?213.
