It was named by Modern Library as one of the 100 greatest novels of the twentieth century and to TIME Magazine's 100 Best English-language Novels from 1923 to 2005, calling it "the quintessential American picaresque of the 20th century." Item Description: Random House, New York, 1952. Hardcover. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. An important existentialist work. First edition, first printing book in probable second issue jacket (Gordon Parks' photo of Ellison on rear panel, but price of $5.95 vs. $3.50). Book near fine with black top staining retained and jacket in near fine condition with minor wear around extremities/spine head and tail, tiny nicks here and there but still very pleasing – black dust jackets are notoriously easy to trash so this one is a welcome sight. Housed in custom case.*********** Inscribed by Ellison – “For Fred Goldstein, With thanks for his help and for his patience. Sincerely, Ralph Ellison”******** A previous bookseller typed note identifies Goldstein as a Random House editor. He’s a mysterious character as we've been unable to find records on this man – despite contact with eminent Ellison scholars and Random House. Ellison did not publish much in his lifetime, so it wouldn't require a large imaginative leap to think Mr. Goldstein played a role with the publication of Invisible Man. Nonetheless, inscribed first printings are relatively rare and a welcome addition to any collection. Inscribed by Author(s). Bookseller Inventory # ABE-18622257075

Item Description: Random House, New York, 1952. Book Condition: Very Good. First edition. Modest amount of the usual rubbing on the spine, and a few smudges on the boards, near very good lacking the dustwrapper. The front fly bears a full page Inscription to author and longtime New Yorker editor, Robert Bingham in the year of publication: "For Bob and Janet Bingham - who understood what is valid and not sheer fantasy of these matters and these adventures before I worked up this sweat. Perhaps this is why we were friends almost on sight. Sincerely, Ralph Ellison. Sept. 1952." Bingham has marked a few passages in the book lightly in pencil, including on the first page: ".because people refuse to see me." Winner of the National Book Award, as well as a Burgess 99 title. We have handled a few inscribed copies of this title but this is clearly the nicest inscription that we've seen. Bookseller Inventory # 411574
