About this Item: Ivan R. Drechsler, Baltimore, 1941. Hardcover. Condition: Good. Presumed First Edition/First Printing. xiii, [1], 225, [7]. Ex-library with usual stamps/markings, and label residue on lower spine. Information at the end of the volume indicates that only about 1000 copies were printed. In Talbot Hamlin's foreword in his book, Benjamin Henry Latrobe, he discusses Ferdinand Clairborne Latrobe, Jr. as a person who was a delight to know. He knew where the best hunting was in Maryland, how to cook terrapin, and about early Chesapeake Bay sailing ships. He wrote a book entitled, "Iron Men and their Dogs", (Baltimore, Dreschler, 1941) commissioned as a history of the Bartlett-Hayward Company and its predecessors in Baltimore. This is the company where the Latrobe Stove, invented by his grandfather, John H. B. Latrobe had been cast and manufactured until 1910. In addition, some of the other books he wrote were: The Epitome of the Chesapeake Bay and The Chesapeake Bay Cook Book. Cover was designed by Bernard K. Shaner. Typography by S. Harold White. Set in Garamond Monotype, four point leaded. Printed on Warren's Cumberland Dull Enamel by the Horn-Shafer Company. "One thousand copies of this book have been placed on the leading bookstands." This company started out in 1837 in Baltimore, Maryland, as Hayward & Friend, stovemakers. In addition to cookstoves, one of the early models produced was the Latrobe Stove, which would be recognized today as essentially a large fireplace insert, used for domestic heating. Over the years the company's name would change many times, and in 1841 it was known as Hayward Bartlett & Company, Stovefounders, Plumbers, Architectural Iron Works, Locomotive Builders, Steam & Hot Water Works. The Bartlett-Hayward Company of Baltimore, Maryland, was started in 1840 as Hayward and Company and was founded by stove manufacturers George Hayward and brothers Jonas and Nehemiah. In 1846, Hayward and Company purchased Latrobe Stove Foundries. Shortly after, this led to the adding of Thomas Bartlett to the renaming of the company to Bartlett-Hayward & Co. The company frequently changed its name over the course of its existence. The Baltimore-based company eventually became a leading manufacturer all over the country during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It expanded into the foundry, machinery, erection, gasholder, and engineering fields and became known for elaborate architectural ironwork. Among Bartlett-Hayward & Co.'s more famous works include the architectural ironwork of the United States Capitol, the State House in South Carolina, and the interior of the Peabody Library of Baltimore. The company built 24 locomotives between October of 1864 and January of 1867, when they discontinued production as the locomotive market became more competitive. The company shut down it's regular production during World War I to make shrapnel shells for the war effort. The company took on this role enthusiastically and was awarded by the U.S. government a Certificate of Merit "For excellence in production of time and detonating fuses and complete rounds of shrapnel". After the war, the company took on new products to keep its workforce employed, focusing at first on items for the post war building boom. It is possible that it was during this "retooling" phase that the company began making fire hydrants. However, it is also known that the company had been making iron gate valves since the turn of the century, so it may have been that fire hydrants had been manufactured earlier as well. In 1936 the company was purchased by the Koppers Company and became known as Koppers Company, Bartlett-Hayward Division. Seller Inventory # 73642
