About this Item: John F. Jewett, Boston, 1853. First Edition. Octavo. 493 pages, frontispiece of Isaac T. Hopper. A remarkable book published a year after Uncle Tom's Cabin when her friend the ardent abolitionist and devoted Quaker, died. She carefully wove together Hopper's abolitionist activities with sections that scholars feel were influenced by Stowe's influential work; in fact, many feel she intended for this book to become a booster for the classic that appeared the previous year. It has to be remembered that many Quakers had wanted to soft pedal the attack on slavery since they saw that it could bring about an end to the United States as a nation. She argues that those Quakers in business were blinded by their need for cotton and it also became a major work in influencing those who called for the end of slavery. A very nice copy bound n publisher's brown cloth, spine decorated in blind and lettered in gilt, only very slight wear to head, corners a bit worn through, occasional light scattered foxing, faint dampstain to outer margin of frontispiece.
