Item Description: London : Kegan Paul, Trench, Trübner and Co., 1898. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. This edition of Keats is an astonishing example of 1890s art deco book design, illustrated and decorated by the Scottish artist, engraver and book illustrator William Brown Macdougall (1868-1936). A collaborator with Aubrey Beardsley and a member of the New English Art Club, Macdougall published something like a dozen handsomely designed and engraved books, often in collaboration with his wife Margaret Armour. His edition of Isabella consists of richly-designed floral patterned borders surrounding the text of Keats' poem. There are 9 engraved plates. The paper used is untrimmed and unpaginated. What makes this edition UNIQUE is that it was printed at Macdougall's private press in Hertfordshire, in a limited edition of 10, of which this is number 3. There is an engraved Christmas presentation card tipped in, with Macdougall's hand-written notes about the occasion of this edition. This is a unique copy of Macdougall's work as a book designer and illustrator, with brown boards, blind-stamped on the top board and spine in a floral design in gilt. No dust jacket as published. There is weakening to the cloth at the top of the hinge, of two and a half inches, but the spine is not detached. The interior of the book is as bright and clean and stunning as the day it was printed. Bookseller Inventory # A2547
