Item Description: Doubleday & Company, New York, 1978. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Anthology/ biography/ Black Interest (illustrator). 1st Edition. 1978, signed 1st edition. Essays deal with Black American art, popular heroes, literature, music, and Mardi Gras. Thinking of Ishmael Reed in the tradition of Zora Neale Hurston opens up his surrealistic novels in a surprising manner: the man is seriously into HooDoo. The essays on New Orleans at Mardi Gras and Haiti, places where voodoo practices are strong, are sweaty evocations, informative, if rather oblique, about this aspect of black history. Reed is at his best when talking about the ""Old Music", paying tribute to Josephine Baker, Muhammad Ali, and Charlie ""Bird"" Parker, or discussing the brilliant and neglected works of Chester Himes. On other themes-- literary currents, politics-- there is a touch of cultural paranoia. Reed works within the equation that everything white or Western is sterile, played out, and everything to do with folklore is the true path toward spiritual purity. His ear for contemporary slang and phrasing is impeccable, and this makes his polemic entertaining. Signed by Author(s). Bookseller Inventory # ir26

This scarce work has been SIGNED by Ishmael Reed on the title page. In his analysis of Ishmael Reed's fiction from the perspective of gender and race theory, Patrick McGee makes a case for the relevance of such fiction to the understanding of contemporary American and Black diasporic cultures. Taking into account Reed's feminist and political critics, McGee argues that Reed's work must be read as a critique of racial ideology. An important new study of this fascinating and controversial writer. SIGNED By Subject. Bookseller Inventory # 5623

Item Description: Stephen Swift, London, 1912. Book Condition: Very Good. First English edition, published in America as The House of Bondage. Sunning and modest wear to the spine ends, a near very good copy lacking the dustwrapper. Inscribed by the author to his uncle Samuel Wright: "With love to Uncle, who read the proofs & saved them from the error of their ways, from Reginald Wright Kauffman, Sept., 1911." There are a few pencil corrections in the text, probably by Kauffman. Kauffman eventually inherited his uncle's library, and this became his own copy. From a large collection of books we purchased from the author's library. Kauffman was born and lived in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, although he also maintained homes in Switzerland and Bath, Maine. After graduating from Harvard in 1900, he wrote dozens of stories, mysteries, children's books, and non-fiction titles. He was the editor of the Bangor, Maine Daily News from 1941-1947. This Rideout novel, published in the U.S. as The House of Bondage was widely praised, specifically by Emma Goldman, as the first serious attempt to explore the problem of women and prostitution.
