Item Description: The Finnish Antiquarian Society, 2010. Soft cover. Book Condition: Very Good. 215 pp., illustrations, bibliography. The thesis is connected with death, memory and ancestor commemoration during the Merovingian Period, the Viking Age and the beginning of the Crusade Period (AD 550–1150) in Finland. During this time, cremation was the dominant burial rite. Three different burial types 1) cremation cemeteries below level ground, 2) inhumation burials and 3) water burials are discussed in five articles. This thesis shows that it is possible to claim that both artefact and site re-use is a much more widespread phenomenon than has previously been thought in Finnish archaeology. It is also a conscious and deliberate behaviour that can be related to an ancestor cult and commemoration of the dead. 0.0. Bookseller Inventory # 9789519057781FIN082014

Item Description: The Finnish Antiquarian Society, 2008. Soft cover. Book Condition: Very Good. 276 pp. illustrations, bibliography, maps. light cover wear. Approximately 125 prehistoric rock paintings have been found in the modern territory of Finland. The paintings are almost without exception located on steep lakeshore cliffs associated with ancient water routes. The range of motifs is rather limited, consisting mainly of schematic depictions of stick-figure humans, elks, boats, handprints and geometric signs. This dissertation is a critical review of the interpretations offered of Finnish rock art and an exploration of the potentials of archaeological and ethnographic research in increasing our knowledge of its meaning. Item Description: Helsinki : The Finnish Antiquarian Society, 2005. Soft cover. Book Condition: New. 222 pages. The essential questions in this study are the following: How did the settlement pattern change during prehistory? How did people change their subsistence strategies in the course of time? Did the cultural development in two areas of northern Lapland, Enontekiö and Inari, follow the same direction or take different directions? The hunter or hunter-fisher societies have changed their subsistence strategies when needed and modified them to adapt to the changed environmental conditions. Because the vegetation and climate have changed quite a lot during the last millennia, human activities have to adapt to the changing environment. Bookseller Inventory # PGtied55
