Item Description: Gale Ecco, Print Editions, United States, 2010. Paperback. Book Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century.++++The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. Item Description: Boston. 1728., 1728. [2],34pp. 20th-century buckram, gilt titles. Ex-Newberry Library, with call number in gilt on spine and a perforated library stamp on the titlepage. Damp-staining to first few leaves, some tanning. Good. Lacks half title. Cotton Mather died on February 13, 1728. The following Sunday, Joshua Gee, who had been Matherís assistant and succeeded the great minister as Pastor of the North Church in Boston, delivered this eloquent eulogy. Gee speaks of Mather in glowing terms, praising the minister for "[t]he capacity of his mind; the readiness of his wit; the vastness of his reading; the strength of his memory." Further, Gee praises Mather as "pious, but not affected; serious without moroseness; grave, but not austere; affable without meanness; and facetious without levity. He was peaceable in his temper; but zealous against sin. He was a strenuous nonconformist to uninstituted ceremonies imposed upon conscience. He was a vigorous defender of the reformed doctrines of grace, and of the mysteries of revealed religion; which he ever regarded as the excelling glory of the christian dispensation: And yet he was catholick in his charity to all good men.desirous to have churches resemble the kingdom of Heaven; willing to receive all men, as Christ receives us to the glory of God; and pleading for no terms of communion among saints, but the terms of salvation. He was abundant in liberality to the poor, both for soul and body; but careful to distinguish the proper objects of it: and obliging to strangers, tho' often ill-requited." A scarce work and fitting memorial to one of the greatest early American ministers. EVANS 3031. SABIN 26830. HOLMES, COTTON MATHER, p.745. MIDLAND NOTES 76:26. GOODSPEED 172:1235.
