About this Item: No Publisher Noted, London, 1992 First Edition. Wraps., 1992. Sample issue. A4. 12pp. Photocopy format as issued. Illustrations. Illustrated wrappers with folded pages loosely inserted. Signed handwritten letter to John Lyle from Patricia Scanlan written on headed notepaper from SuperReal, The British Surreal Journal, 34 Waldemar Av., London SW6 5NA dated 17 May 1992 and consisting of about 160 words in which she asks Lyle if he might write an article on Surrealism in Britain or some other area. 'Maybe you might write something on Transformation and how it came about and about its life. That would be so interesting.' John Lyle's lengthy response stapled to Scanlan's letter written on headed yellow notepaper from 3 Faubourg Saint Roch, 3462 Puisserguier undated and consisting of about 675 words in which he makes it perfectly clear he has no interest in writing an article for the journal, 'I am not the kind of writer you would want in your curiously-titled journal. For myself, I do not wish to write "knocking copy" (which would be necessary in this context) unless I am attacking major enemies of humanity.' However, he does give Scanlan advice and suggests leaving the words 'Surreal' or 'Surrealism' out of the title. A further letter addressed as above from Patricia Scanlan to John Lyle dated 4 June 1992 and consisting of about 120 words in which she thanks Lyle for his comments and criticism. She then asks him if she can reproduce his letter in Issue 1 of the journal. Lyle's response stapled to Scanlan's letter written on yellow headed notepaper from his address in France as above dated 10 June '92 and consisting of about 69 words in which he thanks Scanlan for sending a copy of the magazine 'I can't usefully comment on it because I'm out-of-sympathy with nostalgic patchworks of this kind, in their nature antipathetic to the spirit of surrealism.' He also says his letter was 'personal and private' and he wishes no part of it to be reproduced. SuperReal was a quarterly (frequency became irregular) academic journal of British Surreal writing which also featured art and photography. Only three issues SuperReal, Zero and One in 1992 and Vol. 2 in 1994 were produced. The Advisory Board included David Gascoyne and Toni del Renzio. Contributors to this sample issue include Andrew Barrow, Alastair Brotchie, Roger Cardinal, Nadia Choucha, Conroy Maddox, E.L.T. Mesens, Philip O'Connor, Herbert Read and Edouard Roditi. John Lyle (1932 – 2002) was a bookseller and collector and writer on Surrealism. Crease mark down centre, otherwise very good. Slight creasing otherwise very good. Seller Inventory # C35409

About this Item: Tangier, Morocco, Zero Press, 1949. 1st ed., 1949. Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Editors: Albert Benveniste, Themistocles Hoetis. 8vo. Original illustrated wrappers. Paul Bowles dramatically entered literary consciousness with his tremendous first novel, The Sheltering Sky, in 1949. But it is in his short stories that Bowles achieved greatness in writing, and the two early stories, “A Distant Episode” and “The Delicate Prey” are by far his most powerful. When I first read these two stories in his first collection (1950) with the same name as the latter story I was so overwhelmed that I read each over immediately and subsequently read the stories out loud to many friends. More so than any writer in English, Bowles was able to capture in his art the confrontation of man with a vast, incomprehensible universe which so often does not neatly conform to his limited rational and emotional expectations. The story “The Delicate Prey” first appeared in this periodical published in Tangier (in undoubtedly very small numbers). . Along with Bowles, contributors include James Baldwin, William Carlos Williams and Klaus Mann. This very fragile journal is one of the rarest items in a serious Bowles collection. It came from the collection of his authorized biographer, Virginia Spencer Carr, and it is INSCRIBED to her “with love” by Bowles on the issue page as well as at his story. Given the delicate paper of the covers, this copy is in remarkable condition: the front illustrated cover is bright with just several tiny edge nicks; there is a vertical tear on the unprinted back cover (which could be repaired by a paper conservationist). Inscribed by Author(s). Seller Inventory # 8262

About this Item: American Institute of Physics, 1953. Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Large 8vo. FIRST EDITION, a complete set of the papers which document Feynman's solution of the problem of superfluidity in liquid helium. "In 1950 Feynman left Cornell to join the faculty of the California Institute of Technology, where, except for a year in Brazil (1951-1952), he would spend the rest of his career. At Caltech he turned his attention to the problem of superfluidity in liquid helium. Russian theorist Lev Landau had shown that the remarkable ability of superfluid helium at low temperature to flow without resistance resulted from the fact that the liquid could take up energy from its surroundings only in certain very restricted ways. Feynman succeeded in tracing Landau's observation to its quantum mechanical roots. Feynman diagrams would later become an important research tool in this field, but Feynman did not use them to solve this problem. Instead he reverted to the old-fashioned Schrödinger formulation of quantum mechanics, using his remarkable intuition to guess the nature of a giant quantum system" (American National Biography). The phenomenon of superfluidity had been discovered experimentally during the 1930s, and the great Russian theorist Lev Landau had provided a successful phenomenological description during the 1940s. “While he greatly admired Landau’s contributions to and successes in the field, Feynman pointed out several weaknesses in Landau’s theory. Notably, Landau’s quantum hydrodynamical approach treated Helium II as a continuous medium, which right from the beginning sacrificed the atomic structure of the liquid and thus forestalled the possibility of calculating the various characteristics of the system, such as the various parameters, on an atomic basis. In his first paper on the ‘Atomic theory of the lambda-transition in helium’, he showed ‘from first principles that, in spite of the large interatomic forces, liquid He4 should exhibit a transition analogous to the transition in an ideal gas’ (p. 1291). By writing ‘the exact partition function as an integral over trajectories, using the space-time approach to quantum mechanics’, Feynman could indeed derive a Landau-type energy spectrum [in ‘Atomic theory of liquid Helium near absolute zero’] and further demonstrate phonon-like excitations evolve into roton-like ones at large momenta [in ‘Atomic theory of the two fluid model of liquid helium’]” (Mehra & Rechenberg, The Historical Development of Quantum Theory, Vol. 6, Part 2, p. 1160).
