About this Item: Loujon Press, (New Orleans), 1963. Hardcover. Condition: Very good +. First Edition. Small 4to. Multi-colored letterpressed sheets in cork-covered card wraps, with titles and skeleton decoration stamped to front cover, with wrap-around pictorial jacket (exhibtiing photo of the poet) - all as issued. An ornate production. SIGNED by Bukowski at first page in silver pen and dated Feb. 18, 1964, with a small abstract drawing penned above. Some light rubbing and edgewear; internally fine. Lacking publisher's loosely laid in repro of Buk's letter. From an unnumbered edition of 777 copies. 96pp. An idiosyncratic letterpress edition of Bukowski poems, published early in his career when he was still "essentially unknown" (Weddle, BOHEMIAN NEW ORLEANS, 105). From Jon and Louise Webb's fine press, which also published OUTSIDER magazine. Lawrence Ferlinghetti called the book "the most beautiful printing of poetry I have ever seen in this country," and Kenneth Rexroth reviewed it favorably in the NYT Book Review (Ibid, 104). About this Item: New Orleans: Loujon Press, 1963, 1963. Octavo. Original white stiff wrappers printed with orange decoration, leaves in various colours and widths. With the illustrated dust jacket incorporated into a card wallet folder, with pictoral flap over fore-edge from rear. A fine copy. Some illustrated and facsimile leaves. First edition, first printing, one of 777 unnumbered copies, signed and dated by the author on the front free endpaper (16 February 1964). Bukowski has used yellow paint to sign this copy, rather unusually (copies are more commonly found signed in silver ink). The work collects together what Jon and Louis, the printers, considered to be Bukowski's best works since 1955. It takes its title from a line in a poem by Robinson Jeffers and on the final page the printers describe the printing process in elaborate detail. Together with the facsimile letter loosely laid in, as issued, in which Bukowki comments "I have never seen a book put together in such a way, inventive creativeness and love." Debritto 106. About this Item: Loujon Press, New Orleans, 1963. Paperback. Condition: This copy is nearly fine. First edition. 4to. One of only 777 copies printed. Signed by Bukowski, using thick silver ink, on the front endpaper, and dated, "6-2-63". Arguably Bukowski's most famous book, which collects poetry (66) written between the years 1955-1963. Individual poems merge to form together a body of work unrivalled in kind and very nearly unequalled in quality by Bukowski's contemporaries. But this title was surely enhanced by the skills and dedication of his publisher, Jon Webb, who along with his wife, Gypsy Lou, produced a masterpiece of presentation. The book was lovingly printed one page at a time, handfed with 12-point Garamond Old Style for the poems, 18-point Pabst O.S. for the titles -- to an ancient 8 x 12 Chandler & Price letterpress; on Linweave Spectra paper throughout, 320 lb. for the cover, 160 lb. for the jacket, 75 lb. for the text, in shades of white, wine, stone, saffron, bayberry, peacock, ivory, bittersweeet, gobelin & tobasco." The printing, all manual, was done through the steamy months of June to Septembeer 1963, in a slave quarters workshop back of a sagging ex-mansion in the French Quarter, New Orleans; and hand bound in October of the same year.
