Item Description: Forgotten Books, United States, 2016. Paperback. Book Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. Excerpt from Italy Through the Stereoscope: Journeys in and About Italian Cities The plan of this Stereoscopic Tour of Italy consists of four distinct parts: First, the one hundred stereoscopic photographs, by means of which we are enabled to stand in one hundred of the more important places in Italy. These standpoints are so chosen that, taking them together, it is made possible for us to gain a clear knowledge of each city visited as a whole and a near acquaintance with the buildings and objects of special interest. Second, the patent maps, general and sectional, which are found in a booklet inserted in a pocket in the back cover. By means of these maps, both the point of view and the extent of vision in each stereograph is definitely shown, so that the relation of each stereographed scene to every other one and to the whole city can be seen almost at a glance. I cannot emphasize too strongly the im portance of getting a distinct experience of location in each of the different places in Italy by the help of these maps. In my judgment this map system is the most im portant invention that has ever been made to aid in the use of photographic illustration. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Item Description: Underwood & Underwood, New York, London, etc, 1903. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good-. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. Presumed First Edition. Stated on the title page " See Pocket in back cover for Ten Patent Maps" (all bound in a booklet) - but there are NO 'Maps' in back pocket - as usually found sadly! . This book was published to accompany a 'Lecture Tour' where Dr. Ellison gives a Stereoscopic 'slide' show of a journey through Italy - both geographically and historically - with particular emphasis on Rome. The stereograph cards & book, etc, could also be bought for Teachers/Interested peoples, etc, to buy for their own use. NO Stereograph Cards or Stereo Viewers Included here. BOOK ONLY. Green cloth covers with bright gilt titling to the spine and with bright gilt and black titling to the front cover together with a bright gilt 'sun' decoration. A couple of ink marks to the front cover and the head/tail of the spine and the tips of corners are a little rubbed/bumped- but NO damage and overall a VG bright copy. Internally NO Inscriptions or Marks, though page 1 has been creased across it's length. (lxx) + (2) + 602 pp + (6 page adverts for other 'Stereoscopic 'Tours' published by Underwood). Unillustrated, of course, as the illustrations would have been via the Stereo cards and Viewer. This 'Tour' - and others published by Underwood - must have been real Marvels in the days pre TV/Computers/3D Films etc, etc.! Quite Scarce in this Original form. As the Maps are almost always missing from the pocket, I suspect they may have arrived separately with the cards ? ? ? ; Chunky 16mo 6" - 7" tall. Bookseller Inventory # 112452
