Taciti. (2) C. Velleius Paterculus cum animadversionibus Iusti LipsI, quas postremum auxit et emendavit, large pictorial tailpieces, historiated and decorated initials of various sizes, a large different version of the printer's device repeated on Bb8r on the blank following the indexes to the main works and also on verso of penultimate colophon page, pages: [16], 547, [33 - indexes]; 36; 84, [16 - index], separate paginations for the commentaries, final leaf is a blank, collation: *8, A-Z6, a-z6, Aa6, Bb8; AA-CC6; Aaa-Ggg6, Hhh8. Bound in original full vellum, yapp edges, gilt rules and decoration to both covers, central gilt coat of arms, gilt rules to spine with small gilt floral motif in compartments, gilt lettered title. Vellum discoloured, gilt worn off spine, slightly worn on covers, tiny surface chip to tail of spine, ties missing, signature of Sir John Taylor Coleridge on front endpaper with his address and date of 1853, tiny closed tear and tiny chip to lower edge of A2, small piece missing from lower margin corner of t5, v3, and Fff2, no loss of text, some light ink splashes to lower margin of Hhh3 (last page of index). A very clean tight attractive copy, reprinted from the 1627 edition with different ornaments and title page. The works of Tacitus edited here are: Annalium ab excessu Augusti; Historiarum, ab excessu Neronis; De Moribus Germanorum; De Vita Iulii Agricolae. Justus Lipsius, renowned Flemish humanist, philologist and philosopher, first published his important critical edition of Tacitus in 1574. The edition of 1600 was the last to be published under his supervision before his death in 1606. This volume also contains the work of C. Velleius Paterculus, a Roman historian (circa 19 BC-circa 31 AD) annotated here by Justus Lipsius. John Taylor Coleridge (17901876) whose signature appears on the front endpaper was a judge and classicist, nephew of the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and corresponded with Arnold, Southey, Newman, Pusey, and Keble. (Justo Lipsio [o Justus Lipsius en latín] fue un humanista de fama universal nacido en los Países Bajos en 1547 y muerto en 1606, en cuyo reconocimiento han puesto su nombre al edificio del Consejo de la Unión Europea.
