First Edition
8vo., First English Edition, free endpaper mildly browned, neat inscription on front free endpaper; original red cloth, upper board blocked in yellow and lettered in black, backstrip lettered in black, a very good, bright, clean copy. The German edition was first published anonymously in Lausanne earlier in the same year. Written by pacifist Richard Grelling, this is a scathing attack upon the political and military leadership of Germany that led to the outbreak of WWI. Grelling takes his title from the infamous Zola letter of the Dreyfus scandal some two decades previously. The 'Germany Awake!' of the first chapter became the totemic 'Deutschland Erwache!' of Hitler's Reich. Scarce in this condition. Enser, p.245.
