Item Description: Richard Bentley, London, 1838. Contemporary Half Leather HB. Book Condition: Very good. First Edition Thus. 1838. First Richard Bentley edition. Frontispiece, vignette title page, plain titlle page, and 407pp. Captain Frederick Marryat (1792-1848) served in the Royal Navy and later published several works of both non-fiction and fiction, but is probably best known for his adventure novels and works for children that include 'Masterman Ready' and 'The Children of the New Forest'. Jacob Faithful; or The Adventures of a Waterman was first published in three volumes in 1834. The edition for sale is the first single volume edition published by Richard Bentley. The novel describes the career of a young man who is born on a Thames lighter, and up to the age of eleven has never set foot on land. The lighter is manned by his father, his mother, and himself. His father is a round-bellied little man, addicted to his pipe, and indulging in but few words. These Jacob inherits, and makes frequent use of in later life. His mother indulges in strong drink, and comes to a terrible end. One of his first acts on beginning a life on shore is to sell his mother’s asses for twenty pounds. After spending several years at school, where his adventures are interesting, and some of them laughable, he is bound apprentice, at the age of fourteen, to a waterman. Now fairly launched in life, his real adventures begin. Some of the curious experiences that may befall a waterman form the staple of the book. It is written in a lively style, and is thought to be one of Marryat’s best books. The book is bound in contemporary green half leather over purple cloth boards with gold titling and five raised bands on the spine. The book is in very good condition with some expected shelf wear on the boards and some fading to the cloth around the edges of the boards. The corners are rubbed with a little damage to the leather on the conrer tips of the front board. The spine is slightly faded. The contents are tight and clean with no inscription. There is some offsetting from the frontispiece on the facing illustrated title page. Size: 6.6" Tall. Bookseller Inventory # VILitMarryat01

(John Fort, d.1842, was a Whig politician and sat in the House of Commons from 1832 to 1841, the period during which these books were published. Read Hall was built for his father, Richard Fort, d.1829, in Read, Lancashire, between c.1800 and 1810. Fort was also a wealthy partner in the textile printing firm of Sabden Calilco.). Captain Frederick Marryat, R.N., (1792-1848) served under Lord Cochrane in the IMPERIEUSE which was involved in a number of brilliant attacks on the enemy, including the attack on the French fleet in Aix Roads in 1809. He also took part in the Walcheren expedition that year and served throughout the remainder of the Napoleonic Wars as well as holding command during the first Burmese War. He is also remembered for his celebrated Signal Books. On leaving the Navy he turned to literature and became highly successful in writing a number of 'naval yarns' drawing upon his extensive sea-service. In this work a good deal of the action takes place on lighters in the Port of London, travelling up and down the tidal Thames. Jacob loses both his parents in dramatic circumstances and is brought up by the owner of the wharf where Jacob's family's lighter was based. As with a number of Marryat's most successful novels, Jacob Faithful first appeared in the Metropolitan Magazine but being first published in book form in this 'three-decker', the accepted form for publishing novels in the pre-Victorian age and beyond. Marryat brings his tale to conclusion in the last chapter in which 'every thing is wound up much to the reader's satisfaction, and not a little to the author's, who lays down his pen, exclaiming, Thank God !'.
