Item Description: Verlag fur Jüdische Kunst und Kultur Fritz Gurlitt, Berlin, 1920. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Hardcover - very clean, no marks, very clean inside, no dustjacket - from a private collection - collection of famous Yiddish stories with woodcuts - very rare - ["Isaac Leib Peretz (May 18, 1852 - 3 April, 1915), also known as Yitskhok Leybush Peretz and Icchok Lejbusz Perec or Izaak Lejb Perec (in Polish), best known as I.L. Peretz, was a Yiddish language author and playwright. Payson R. Stevens, Charles M. Levine, and Sol Steinmetz count him with Mendele Mokher Seforim and Sholem Aleichem as one of the 3 great classical Yiddish writers. Sol Liptzin wrote: "Yitzkhok Leibush Peretz was the great awakener of Yiddish-speaking Jewry, and Sholom Aleichem its comforter. Peretz aroused in his readers the will for self-emancipation, the will for resistance. Some of Peretz's most important works are Oyb Nit Nokh Hekher ("If not Higher") and the short story "Bontshe Shvayg" ("Bontsche the Silent"). "Bontsche" is the story of an extremely meek and modest man, downtrodden on earth but exalted in heaven for his modesty, who, offered any heavenly reward, chooses one as modest as the way he had lived. While the story can be read as praise of this meekness, there is also an ambiguity in the ending, which can be read as showing contempt for someone who cannot even imagine receiving more."] - [" Jacob Steinhardt (Hebrew: , May 1887 - February 11, 1968) was a painter and woodcut artist, who worked mainly in woodcuts depicting biblical and other Jewish subjects. He was a member of the Bezalel school group. Born in Zerkow (now erków), Germany, he immigrated to British Mandate of Palestine in 1933. He studied at the School of Art in Berlin in 1906, then studied painting with Louis Corinth and engraving with Hermann Struck in 1907. Jacob Steinhardt with his daughter Josepha and friend's children ~1942 From 1908 to 1910 he lived in Paris, where he associated with Henri Matisse and Théophile Steinlen, and in 1911 he was in Italy. When World War I broke out, he enlisted in the German army, and served on the Eastern Front in Poland and Lithuania, and then in Macedonia. After the war, he returned to Berlin, and in 1922 married Minni Gumpert. He participated in the New Sezession, and founded the Pathetiker Group. After moving to British Mandate of Palestine, Steinhardt opened an art school in Jerusalem in 1934. In 1948 he closed the art school and became Chairman of the Graphics Department at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design. From 1954-57 he was the Director of that school. Steinhardt died 1968 and was buried in Nahariya."]. Bookseller Inventory # 13441.200817os

Item Description: Berlin: Verlag für Jüdische Kunst und Kultur. Fritz Gurlitt, 1920. Only edition. The dimensions of the volume, which is bound in grey paper printed wraps, are roughly 29.5 x 24 cm. It consists of 25 unpaginated leaves and a frontispiece (sometimes lacking). The other illustrations are eight tipped-in plates and a facsimile of a music score. Some ruckling to the wraps, otherwise a good copy on lightly-aged paper. Striking woodcut on front cover, 13 x 16 cm, showing and old Jew with a boy before a table with two candles. An attractive work, delicately and sensitively illustrated with images of Jews at prayer. Made all the more poignant in the knowledge that Nadel perished at Auschwitz. Inscribed to 'Emmy' on the front free endpaper from 'Kurt zum 19. X. 21.', with a quote from Alfred Polgar: 'Es dauert lange, bis man reif [sic] zur Lebensfreude. - Etwa bis zu [sic] jenem Tag, an dem die Todesangst beginnt.' Uncommon: no copy on COPAC.
