Jacquemont travelled to India in 1828 as a plant-collector on behalf of the Jardin de Plantes, he visited Amber in Rajputana, met with the Ranjit Singh at his capital of Lahore, and visited the kingdom of Ladakh in the Himalayas, "travelling for three and a half years he encountered difficulties and privations in his arduous labours, the fruits of which greatly enhanced the science of Natural History His letters, written in India to his family, give a most vivid account of the botany of the N.W. Himalayas and particularly of the social condition of India in those days" (Buckland, Dictionary of Indian Biography). He died of cholera in Bombay on December 7, 1832. Contemporain de Stendhal et de Mérimée, il fut l’une des figures les plus attachantes de l’époque romantique ; ses écrits sont d’une grande qualité.
