(lxxvi, Memoir of Beattie), 239 pp. including advertisement, preface, poetry. Beattie, 1735-1803, was a noted Scotch poet and professor of moral philosophy at Marischal College in Aberdeen. Boxed set of 10 volumes - reprints - uniform bindings. May require additional postage depending upon shipping destination. "Important in the history of the Scottish Enlightenment and eighteenth-century literature and thought, James Beattie was a figure of high reputation and influence in a variety of fields. Although undoubtedly a key personality of the time, there has never previously been a complete edition of Beattie's works. This collection of Beattie's works in prose and verse brings together for the first time his many-sided contributions, and allows an appraisal of his considerable achievements. His view on literary criticism and belles-lettres, at times anticipating the ideas of the Romantics, appear in the Essays on Poetry and Music and Dissertations Moral and Critical . His contribution to philosophical debate is represented by The Essay on Truth . The set also includes Forbes' Life of Beattie . Beattie's most enduring influence was arguably his poetry, with The Minstrel powerfully affecting Wordsworth and the Romantics. His most important poems are reproduced here in the form in which they were known in the late Eighteenth Century. The final miscellaneous volume collects, for the first time, rare items which illuminate Beattie's character and the wide range of his interests. " Set includes: 9Beatie DISSERTATIONS MORAL AND CRITICAL (2) Beattie ESSAYS ON POETRY AND MUSIC (3) Beattie ELEMENTS OF MORAL SCIENCE I (4) Beattie ELEMENTS OF MORAL SCIENCE II (5) Beattie EVIDENCES OF THE CHRISTIAN RELIGION (6) Beattie AN ESSAY ON THE NATURE AND IMMUTABILITY OF TRUTH (7) Beattie POETICAL WORKS (8) Various MISCELLANEOUS WRITINGS (9) Forbes THE LIFE AND WRITINGS OF JAMES BEATTIE I (10)Forbes THE LIFE AND WRITINGS OF JAMES BEATTIE II. Contemporary polished calf boards with light wear to corners. The spines have been rebacked nicely matching leather with gilt decorations and lettering on a black field. Both rear boards are embossed with the circular stamp (2" diameter) in the center of the board: "Public Libraries Glasgow". The inside front board of each book and the facing front fly leaf had former labels which have been neatly removed. The inside cover of Volume 1 has the small (2½" x 3½") former owner's (D. Cuthbertson) crested bookplate. Volume 2 has a small 2-line stamp to the center of the first blank leaf: "Glasgow Public Library" and again on the title page. Both title pages are foxed (volume 1 heavily so because of the frontispiece offset) and have paper repairs to upper right corners where a previous owner's inscriptions have been removed. Otherwise, this is a handsome, tight, clean and wide-margined copy of this excellent early life of Beattie. ADDITIONAL PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. Bookseller Inventory # 841
